I’ve been working on this cup since early springtime. Our long cold spring made it hard to sprout some seeds, so I planted these seeds three times, and finally they sprouted. Love-in-a-mist, a.k.a. Nigella sativa is one of my favorite flowers. It’s just sooo pretty.
I knew the tiny black seeds long before I knew the flowers. They are used in Armenian style string cheese, which I had occasionally as a kid. My sister and I didn’t like the strong flavor of the seeds, so we’d pick them out and hide them in little piles that could easily be mistaken for mouse poop. There was probably some giggling involved. My mom was not a fan.
Later, I worked at a feminist vegetarian restaurant and did some cooking there. I eventually got to the point where I was allowed to help bake the bread. One of the owners had a very special recipe for a sourdough rye bread. When the loves were about to go in the oven, they got sprinkled with these seeds, which I admired for their dark black color. They added a delicious flavor to the bread.
It wasn’t until a few years after that that I figured out what amazing flowers these seeds came from. I love how we develop relationships with plants over time, getting to appreciate more and more as we get to know them better.
We had some true nettle magic happen in the studio this week. I’ve always been impressed by the ways and places that plants grow, but this caught me by surprise.
I had a few nettle mugs drying super slowly, hanging out under plastic for a week or so. I lifted the plastic to find some of the tiny flowers headed upwards - growing. And then I noticed that several of the leaves had grown tiny roots that were growing along the surface of the clay, headed out to find water and nutrients. These are such amazing beings that I get to work with.
I carefully removed the leaves and planted the roots in some clay slip to transport them back to the garden.
ryn’s getting some evening primrose into the dehydrator!! i’m so excited about how much evening primrose we have this year! woo! we don’t work with oats because of gluten sensitivity, but we find that evening primrose has very similar effects plus awesome warming action, which as a person who runs cold, makes me super happy! ❤️❤️ #eveningprimrose #medicinalplants #herbaltea #homemade
#bluevervain is one of my favorite herbs especially for the busy farming season. The perfect ally for type A personalities who keep putting too many irons in the fire and tend to feel overwhelmed by their own creation. Blue vervain is part of our Focus, Calm Mind, and A Good Night’s Sleep formulas. The beautiful perennial can grow up to 7 feet tall and looks beautiful in the late summer garden. I love to combine the bitter tincture with lemon balm glycerite for the extra soothing effect on the nervous system and to sweeten the taste a little.
A simple but effective hand salve: marigold (Calendula) petal oil maceration mixed with melted beewax. I usually also add some coconut oil and lanolin to soften the skin and lavender essential oil for a soothing smell...
Prosta, ale efektywna maść do rąk: macerat z płatków nagietka połączony z woskiem pszczelim. Ja z reguły dodaję jeszcze olej kokosowy, lanolinę i olejek lavendowy, aby pachniała kojąco

Comfrey plant for #floralsyourway! Comfrey is special to me ... when my son was a baby, my midwife Paula taught me how to make comfrey salve for our herbal apothecary at home. She had a big comfrey plant in her yard and we harvested so many leaves together one afternoon with our babies on our backs. I always have comfrey in my garden to remember her, and her salve recipe continues to bring healing through the small batches I make and offer locally! What stories do you have about connections to loved ones through special plants? (By the way, IC folks, I have some salve freshly made - let me know if you want some!)

Sage = wisdom & longevity- in language & in herbal practices both ancient & modern. This perennial herb has been treasured around the world for 1000’s of years. It’s easy to grow in full sun, avoid overwatering. In cooking, a little goes a long way & adds a savory depth to dishes. It’s easy to see how Sage gained its reputation for longevity & wisdom (think of the terminology for a wise older person to seek out for guidance from- a “sage”) when we look at it’s long-practiced healing uses. Sage is used for fighting infection & inflammation (often utilized in dental care & for sore throats), lowering cholesterol, supporting strong memory, easing signs of skin aging, assisting digestion, easing menopause symptoms & more. Many Indigenous cultures, whose deep & ancient wisdom is to be respected (& from a sustainable living perspective, Indigenous values are central for healing the world), burn sage. It is used smoldering as “smudge” for purification, healing, clarity, insight & more. For centuries, Sage was a staple in gardens around the world & continues to be popular today. Do you grow sage? Share your personal stories about this wonderful herb!
