one thing that meditation seems to do is to inspire kindness to others, and there’s definitely some evidence here. One study found that a social-emotional learning program coupled with mindfulness was more effective than a classic “social responsibility” program in several measures. Kids in the former treatment had greater empathy, perspective-taking, and emotional control, compared to the control group. They were also more “prosocial,” and had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol than their counterparts in the control group.

With a rich history dating back thousands of years, loving-kindness meditation or Metta from the Pali language, is the cultivation of benevolence, kindness and amity unto all beings. It is a meditation practice of heart—a feeling of warmth and care for oneself and others. Loving-kindness meditation reminds us of the interconnectedness between all beings and collectively, our wish for well-being. It’s far more effective than producing momentary good feelings. This increasingly popular form of meditation has undergone research in the past several years and science is pointing to the many positive mental and emotional effects of individuals who practice regularly.
It’s a simple practice that is easy to do with children. It’s the repetition of some simple phrases, directing them towards yourself and then to others. Loving kindness can be given and received. It’s a beautiful practice that is interchangeable. A practice that I offer to myself when I am faced with challenging times, and offer to others including the world when the world needs a little healing.

Can you imagine if you and I had learned to meditate at age 7!!! • There’s always divine - perfect timing for everything, but wouldn’t it have been amazing and life enhancing?!!! My niece Emily, when she first saw me meditating the other morning, said “ok, that’s weird!!” Shortly after, she brought a cushion, her unicorn and asked me to teach her. After three or four minutes into our meditation she said “I can feel the peace”!!!!!! Aaahhhhh ☮️

One of the styles of meditation I’ve practiced many times is the body scan. The image above gives a very basic idea of how it works. This is a primary meditation method used on Vipassana retreats.

The idea is to mentally scan the body using the sensations noticed as an anchor to stay neutral.

The goal of this meditation is to become aware of all the things that are going on in our bodies without trying to change them. We are working on our acceptance of ourselves and the world in which we exist.

What I like about this style of meditation is that it speaks to a wider truth about life in general. It’s easy to be happy when things are going well, and less so when we’re in discomfort or pain. By taking our awareness to areas of discomfort or pain and sitting with these sensations without judgement or longing we transform our relationship and understanding of them and through practice find acceptance.

This is why the body scan has also become a staple in the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction course which offers relief to people with chronic pain or illnesses. . .
