Self-care is such a buzzword recently and I am here to talk about the most important part of my self-care routine, medication. Growing up I was always so insecure and NERVOUS. I drove myself to the hospital at 19 bc I thought I was dying and little did I know years later I would be diagnosed with Panic Disorder and PMDD. I also would have periods of very low moods, overthink constantly, would obsess over things sometimes and even would have suicidal thoughts. This impacted my relationships, my work and basically everything in between.
Three years ago I made the scary plunge to get on medication (and yes it is quite terrifying). I am not going to sit here and say it has been perfect but it has been a lifesaver and has improved my quality of life . I feel like myself, my confidence is rockin and I am able to cope with anxious thoughts or depressed moods because of medication. If you have been hesitant and it’s something you’ve been thinking about for like 10 years - go for it. I understand not everyone has a great experience with medication but for me it was the best decision I ever made. ⭐️
You all need to know this, disorders are really complex. Before saying, I’m in depression or I have an OCD. You need to know what it actually is. It’s not as easy as some people thing it is. YOU NEED TO GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!
Thank you @crazyheadcomics for such an amazing post.✨ .

I'm so disappointed that there are still so many people who think depression is a mindset problem. So I try to put this simple;
Someone with depression can do everything right (strong support network, healthy food, and habits, etc.) and still feel depressed, just like someone can do everything right and still get cancer, it's an illness.
A strong, healthy mindset can help, but it won't cure depression, just like it won't cure cancer. I think part of the problem is that people diagnose themselves very easy these days. When they feel sad for three days they say they are depressed, but depression is more than feeling sad, it's like being paralyzed, trapped into your own body full with overwhelming emotions. You can go through a tough time without being depressed, we all have times that life doesn't work in our favor and we feel sad and tired, and we want to give up, but depression is not that, depression is 20 times that feeling + more. I strongly feel that if people understand the difference, they can also see that mindset can 'cure' the 'tough times' state, but it won't cure depression. Not to say that mindset doesn't help, cause it does. You need a healthy mindset to ask for help and to work on yourself, but even if you do this and you do everything else right there are still people who struggle with depression, and they have to find a way to cope with it.
I live with depression cause of my genes + my body's inability to break down fructose, I need to take meds the rest of my life, and that's okay. I used to feel very sad when people told me to 'cheer up' or 'change your mindset', but it no longer bothers me. I know I do everything right, and that's enough for me.
What's your take on this
Together, we can really make a difference in changing the stigma around mental illness! Let’s work together and always support each other in recovery!
