Accurate metering is very important but the light/time of day will affect the look of the photo as well. These were captured with TMAX p3200 and were metered the same way but one was taken at 30 minutes before sunset and the other 30 minutes after sunset which makes a big difference. Both were metered with the Leica M5 in-camera meter by basically pointing the meter at the center of the wall and then opening up 1 stop over what the meter read. Do you use it, should you use it, does it matter? . To over simplify this, that little needle correlates to the metering mode you've chosen (or left alone) from another little button which selects how the camera will measure and meter the scene or subject giving you the exposure. If the needle is left, the exposure is darker, to the right, it's lighter. . Does it make a difference? You bet it does, especially in this scene. I generally use the center weighted mode out on location, but for this one with the warm directional evening light falling on Hadley I flipped over to spot metering forcing the camera to only evaluate a single area within the scene vs the whole scene. Arguably though, shooting RAW, I easily have the latitude to change this in post, but why if I can get it right in camera first? . Play around with it if you haven't and see how your camera "sees" then use it to your advantage to build your creative exposure! .
