I am so excited to announce that today, right now, you can watch the first episode of a three part miniseries I have been working on for the last year! The miniseries, Pondlife, is about microbes (amazing), and is being released through @AMNH. Head over to the @AMNH YouTube to watch the first episode now, link is in my bio and my stories, also subscribe to make sure you don’t miss the next two episodes, which will be released over the next few weeks!
.
I’m so proud of this project, and am super excited to share it with you. This is just the beginning of my goal to get microbes and microbial content on screens and into natural history documentation!
.
I have many people and organisations to thank for the time and hard work they contributed to make this project so good.
.
Cinematography and editing - Serena Kuo @serenackuo.
.
Original music, sound effects, and animation - Ramin Rahni @raminrahni.
.
Location sound and sound mixing - Jon Flores @krampkroala.
.
Assistant Producer - Lisa Rifkind.
.
Executive producers - Erin Chapman @elcwt & Eugenia Levenson.
.
A very important thanks to the foundations that supported this project, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation @moorefound and Science Sandbox, and initiative of the Simons Foundation @sciencesandbox.
.
Lastly, thank you to my place of work, the American Museum of Natural History @AMNH, for all their support and for giving me the time and space to work on this and helping me get it out to the world. I’m deeply appreciative to all involved.

Feast your eyes on the one, the only, Spirogyra, the prolific proliferator currently greening up yesterday’s pond water. This early spring bloomer is a sight to behold. An alga of unmatched beauty, and curly plastids.

A nice round ciliate from the Gowanus Canal. Here you can see it stuffing its face with some kind of scum that it found among a growth of diatoms. Technically it’s stuffing its cytostome, but you get the idea.

Hello gorgeous. This diatom is a diamond that I found in the rough of the Gowanus Canal. Those still waters sure do run deep. .

“It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.” -David Attenborough
Happy belated 93rd birthday Sir David Attenborough!
The Spirogyra filaments here are home to many other organisms. The little bumper cars you can see zipping along are all ciliates that live on the surface of the Spirogyra. They use the Spirogyra filaments like highways, zooming back and forth along their lengths. They live by eating bacteria and other small microbes that coexist with the Spirogyra. This clip is sped up 2x to capture the buzzy scene. .

A slow pan along a single Spirogyra cell. As I focus through the cell take a look at all the activity that’s going on inside. All this movement is caused by the activity of the proteins and vesicles inside the cell, and a process called cytoplasmic streaming, where the cytoplasm (the clear water-based fluid that fills the cell) is constantly circulated around the cell to keep all the nutrients and small molecules distributed. In big algal cells like this one you can see this process really clearly. Also try to spot the cell nucleus, a clear shape in the middle of the cell.
