When every student is reading a different book, it can be challenging to keep a pulse on reading pace, genre diet, and overall class needs. That’s why I use a simple book spine accountability approach to stay organized with independent reading. Thirteen days of school left, and we’re not slowing down over here. Our last reading unit began today. We’re doing survival stories (Hatchet, Brian’s Winter, Island of the Blue Dolphins, and North) for lit circle book choices and Touching Spirit Bear as the read aloud and to use as the common text for the modeling portion of our daily minilessons. I am a big believer of holding students to high expectations until the very end, so that we all maintain our sanity and find value until the end of the school year. I also love the irony in doing a survival stories genre at the end of the school year .

Our district has been talking a lot about readers’ workshop this year. One of the conversations we’ve been having is about reading notebooks. I love how Christina @hansonhallway incorporates language, reading, and writing into her secondary notebooks with tabs and then organizes each class’s notebooks in separate baskets. . . ALSO - this anchor chart (swipe ) Christina created during a mini lesson when her school began workshop a couple years ago is so perfect! Implementing explicit lessons like this one, reading stamina, book fit, etc. is so important. . . Last day of school today, which brings up all the feels. I had an amazing group of 6th graders this year that is one of those classes I will always remember and hold tight to my heart. Summer brings a new role for me, as I shift into creating resources for middle school LA teachers, something I am insanely passionate about. Being able to share what I have learned with others across the country/world is a true gift. My new office is all ready to go, and I can hardly wait to spend time here creating and getting the ideas swirling in my mind out into the universe. #hellosummer #timetocreate #homeoffice

#Repost @virtualmsteacher . . . Stealing from my fellow middle level ed/Central alum () as I live vicariously through her #nerdcampmi posts. Too many times middle school teachers are told that we’re “brave,” “crazy,” or “a blessing” because we choose to teach middle school, & “why would anyone choose that age group?” I not only chose but got a degree in teaching “that age group” because it all comes down to the kids. That “in between stage” is what makes these kids sassy, ambitious, funny, & full of all the potential in the world. It’s important that they see that middle school doesn’t have to be their awkward years, but the ones they discover who they are, what they want to be, & what they truly care about. Yes, it takes a special person to love middle school, but don’t knock it ‘til you try it. I did, & I love that I found my place in the middle.✏️ #SteppingOffMySoapbox
