This was immediately after my last MMA fight. Martial arts is special in its ability to build mental toughness and resolve. Because it's not easy to do by any stretch. It's uncomfortable, it's rough, it's painful, it's tiring, it's aggressive, it's competitive. Being able to overcome those things, or even follow through despite them, builds a sort of conviction in oneself, the conviction that I know I am a person who can endure difficulty and still prevail. I can handle tough situations. It also teaches girls to look at their body in terms of function over aesthetics. I love dance, and many other sports/arts have their own virtues, however many of them do involve the judgement of oneself and others in terms of how we look. In fighting, it comes down to one thing, ability. You can either do the techniques, or you can't. And that's a healthier standard to have girls judge themselves upon- it's something they can practically improve and excel at if they decide to. It's something they have the power to develop, and it all comes from their own will, effort, and discipline. Those things are great assets to develop to apply to life's pursuits. Furthermore, there is something about the nature of fighting that can turn a shy passive person into an assertive and confident person. Knowing of your abilities physically despite perhaps your small size, understanding your capacity for aggression and competition, learning that you are mentally and physically way tougher than you thought- it's hard to have these experiences and not feel comfortable using your voice or standing up for yourself. That's how I've experienced the benefits of many years in this sport, and I'm thrilled to start to see some of these results within my own classes and groups.
