Milk protein is a great first major allergen to introduce to baby because you can do it easily with full fat whole milk yogurt In these videos (swipe right) Gus & Hannah are 6 months and 3 weeks old and it’s their fourth day trying solid foods. You can pre-load the baby spoon with yogurt and give it to baby to self-feed About half (53%) of all babies under age 1 who have food allergy have milk allergy...but research also shows that only about 2% of children under age 5 have a cow’s milk allergy The good news is that although it’s among the most common infant food allergy, many children will outgrow their milk allergy later in childhood As adults many of us don’t each as much dairy as we did when we were kids...and if it upsets your stomach or causes gas you’re experiencing lactose intolerance. The “intolerance” is difficulty breaking down the milk sugar (lactose) and that’s totally different than being allergic to milk protein ♀️ If you’ve had to avoid dairy in your diet because of sensitivities in baby when breastfeeding, many moms are able to start slowly reintroducing it to their own diet and trialing dairy again with baby when he starts solids around 6 months of age (but go slow :) It’s best to avoid reduced fat dairy products for babies (until about age 2) because they need the fat for brain development; however, full fat whole milk yogurt is an awesome way to introduce that milk protein...even if it is a little on the messy side ♀️ #babyledweaning #milkallergy
•MILK LADDER•
In today’s blog post I’m sharing my tips for reintroducing milk if your child has been dairy free due to confirmed allergy. Link in bio
We’ve had a few failed attempts along the way but my 4 year old can now eat cooked foods containing milk hurrah! We’ve also completed ladders for wheat, egg, oats and legumes. Soya is still a complete no-no.
Have you been advised to start the milk ladder? How are you getting on?
While brother was at soccer practice, Emma and I decided to try a new recipe (cannot wait to share it with y’all!!) .
I was seriously PUMPED when I spotted these @nestletollhouse #top8free chocolate chips @Publix . Like.... I may have teared up a little because they’re safe AND cheaper than most allergy-friendly brands ♀️
.
ANYWAYS, I was beyond pleasantly surprised when I flipped it over and it had an allergen-free chocolate chip cookie recipe (swipe to see recipe). Thank you Nestle for thinking about your #foodallergycommunity when making this product, and letting our whole family enjoy your wonderful chocolate
Let’s talk about feeding babies meat Meat can be hard because it’s a great way to get the important iron that your baby needs, but how do you make it safe to feed a baby (...because dry meat can be a choking hazard)?! Here’s Hannah trying lamb at 6 months adjusted age on Day 4 of starting solids. If you swipe left you can see an easy way to prepare the strips of lamb for #babyledweaning (slow cooked lamb for 6 hours in some low sodium broth + water, shredded cooked meat and then served strips of shredded lamb + cooking juice back in @ezpzfun Mini Bowl for baby) But you can also purée cooked lamb with breastmilk or formula (or the cooking juice too if you prefer). Then pre-load a baby spoon with the purée meat and offer to baby, thereby allowing baby to still self-feed meat even if you or baby is not totally ready for solid strips yet (...but honestly they also ate the puréed meat by hand too) I like the Tiny Spoon + the Tiny Bowl or Mini Bowl from @ezpzfun for soupy foods like these styles of prepared meats. You can get 10% off all ezpz products with code KATIE10 at ezpzfun.com So...have you tried meat with your baby yet, how did you make it and how did it go?!
Non-Dairy Sources of Calcium Save this post + Tag your dairy-free friends ✌
If you can’t have dairy because you’re allergic or intolerant, or choose not to have it for environmental, ethical reasons, health reasons etc, thats totally cool✌☺️ BUT it’s important ensure you meet your calcium requirements by consuming a variety of alternatives that contain calcium!
Calcium is essential for healthy, strong bones, as well as proper functioning of your neuromuscular system and heart! And if you don’t include a variety of calcium rich foods in your eating, you may risk weakening your bones, which can lead to fractures, brittle bones, osteopenia & osteoporosis.
~
In Australia it is recommended that we consume 1000-1300mg calcium per day (exact amount varies with age and gender).
~⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Some non-dairy calcium containing foods include are pictured above
~
It’s also important to look at the bioavailability of calcium. The efficiency of calcium absorption varies across foods as calcium is not as well absorbed from foods rich in oxalic acid (eg spinach) or phytic acid (seeds, nuts, grains). Absorption from soy milk is better. You can improve calcium absorption with vitamin D and weight bearing exercise Tag your friends ✌
