Even though our roles reversed...We made it! I may look sad in the photo, but I’m definitely one of those moms who’s thrilled for the school year to end and summer to start—especially now that the kids are older.
This year flew by faster than we could have imagined. In the last year, we wrapped up a deployment, sold a house, bought a house, took a mini PCS road trip vacay, moved halfway across the country, started new schools, played sports, made new friends and so much more. It always feels like one year of military life is like 3 civilian years. Anyway...in a few more hours, school’s out for the summer! ☀️
Hey y’all I decided to close down my shop for a couple weeks! My little guy and I will be making a trip to Arkansas to spend our summer with family while my husband has more Army training! As of right now, the only wreaths that are available for purchase are the ready to ship ones! So go check those out if you’re still looking for a Summer wreath
Flower power ✌lesson of the day:
I worked a corporate job out of college because like any millennial post-recession, I was lucky to get any work that offered semi-decent benefits. While I don’t regret it (met some of the most influential people I know in kitchenettes) I’m glad I took leaps to get out of it, encouraged by the older/wiser who shared high rise office space with me. People who saw how young and naive I was, knowing that my momentary stresses about money or filing deadlines were going to be tiny blips in a history of waves. They knew well before I did that I’d find my own way even if it wasn’t there. We don’t live in the same world our parents grew up with—one career is rare nowadays and while that notion weirded me out ten years ago, it holds an exciting potential I’m still living out to this day.
Don’t sell yourself short.
Find your passion (Eleanor Young would roll her eyes #CrazyRichAsians) and keep evolving. You’ll be amazed at the garden you’ve grown and the blossoms that bloom because of it.
Every move cycle you say you aren’t going to get attached to a dream location, but it sneaks up on you. Before you know it, you’ve found Target, the perfect school district and the perfect house (aka THE trifecta) and you are laser focused on one (or two) duty stations convincing yourself that the military knows all the work you’ve put in so of course they’ll just go along with your plan! And then...the RFOs come in and cue either angels singing or the sound of a balloon deflating. If you’re on the move this summer, are you excited about where you’re headed
Meet the Maker Day 2: How I started ✍️ .
.
I first started learning the art of hand lettering in 2015. I had just graduated from Wheaton College and moved with my husband to Fort Lee, Virginia, to be with him while he completed his basic officer leadership course for the military. His training was only four months long, so we lived in a hotel on the army post. It was definitely a memorable experience to live in a hotel for that long! I had a lot of free time on my hands during that season of life, so I decided to teach myself calligraphy. ️
.
.
I quickly fell in love with hand lettering. ❤️ I spent many afternoons in the hotel room practicing and watching little tutorials and videos online. After we moved to Tennessee at the beginning of 2016, I purchased a journaling Bible and continued to practice by hand lettering Bible verses within the margins of my new Bible. I still use the same journaling Bible, so it's fun to flip through the pages and see some of my earlier attempts at hand lettering!
.
.
In 2016 I participated in the #30daysofbiblelettering challenge, and that's when I decided to open this Instagram account. In 2017, a few people started asking me to hand letter certain verses or quotes for them, so I began accepting some custom orders. Their positive feedback boosted my confidence and I started thinking more seriously about opening an Etsy shop!
.
.
After a lot of hard work, research, and prayer, I officially opened my Etsy shop in November 2017! Since then I've been so blessed by everyone's encouragement and support! It's been so fun for me to share my hand lettering journey with you all. If I could offer you any encouragement, I would quote @laracasey: "You know all those things you've always wanted to do? You should go do them!" ✨ And I love Colossians 3:23: "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men." .
.
So that’s how my hand lettering journey began! Let me know if you have any questions for me or if you can relate to my story at all! I look forward to hearing your stories as well.
Well this hit me like a ton of bricks. Sometimes it's important to remind yourself if this simple yet powerful message. It is so easy to give into the monumental weight of being a military spouse. To push everything you ever dreamed of aside to be all things at home. Here's the reality, that way of thinking will break you. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
For years I've told myself I couldn't do the things I wanted to do to develop myself and my business because of remote duty stations, being a full time work-at-home momma, no family near by to help out. What I've finally realized is that if you want something enough, you'll dig deep and make it work.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I've had my eye on this spectacular retreat for milspouse creatives, it was seriously calling out to my heart every time I saw it mentioned. I knew it was exactly what I needed but timing is rough. Luckily, I was able to have an actual conversation with my husband about this while he's in port. He was so supportive, saying my gut has never been wrong and this is something I needed to do and we'd figure it out despite him being deployed. Phone calls with my momma revealed the same level of support. Moral of the story, you matter, what you want matters. You have to work for it and you have to ask for what you need but you can find ways to make it all work.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
