Are you headed to Northern Spark this weekend? Help Mia get started on a youth mural project, led by artist Natchez Beaulieu, at this year’s late-night art festival that lights up the Twin Cities and is produced by @northernlights.mn! This summer local youth will work together to design and paint a mural inspired by "Hearts of Our People: Native Women Artists." Share your visions of how we can honor Native Women Artists in our community. We will project these first ideas onto the @allmyrelationsarts gallery to begin the creative process. "Hearts of Our People: Native Women Artists” is presented by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. #NorthernSpark #HeartsOfOurPeople #NativeWomenArtists #MinneapolisInstituteOfArt #artsmia #Art #Museum #ArtMuseum #Exhibition #NativeArt #WomenArtists #Inspiration #Creativity #Legacy #Power #Relationships #Honor #Mural #Community

Spring is here (at least inside the museum) as #ArtInBloom is in full swing through Sunday, April 14, at Mia! Stop in to explore over 160 floral interpretations of art throughout the galleries. Learn more this free festival of flowers at artsmia.org. Floral artist Alissa Nudi, of @BloomTimeFloral on her inspiration: "My first three years at Art in Bloom, I interpreted Impressionist artwork. I feel this sculpture, with its mastery of marble and clean lines, will challenge me in a new way. This piece required many attempts to get the floral interpretation just right." #Spring #Flowers #ArtInBloom #Minneapolis #MinneapolisInstituteOfArt #artsmia #Art #Museum #ArtMuseum #Inspiration #Creativity #FloralArtistry #VeiledLady #RafaelloMonti #Sculpture #Marble #19thCentury #BloomTimeFloral

"In general, the fashion pieces show just how much indigenous art has evolved, and they cut through any myth of its homogeneity. An Anishinaabe jingle dress and beaded headband from the 1900s evokes the flapper-style silhouettes that dominated the time period, showing that a traditional garment can even reflect the current trends of the day. Another piece by Okuma, a hand-beaded pair of Christian Louboutin platforms, combines traditional craft with an ultramodern flourish." - @chrisjallaire for @voguemagazine on #HeartsOfOurPeople, now on view at Mia. Don't miss your chance to see "Hearts Of Our People: Native Women Artists" free during My Mia Week through June 9! Learn more and reserve your tickets at artsmia.org. Can you name #5WomenArtists? How about contemporary Apsáalooke (Crow) artist @wendyredstar, who created this piece, “Winter,” from "The Four Seasons" series in 2012. Wendy Red Star is a rising artist in the contemporary art world. Born and raised on the Crow Indian Reservation in south-central Montana, Red Star grew up engrossed in the lifestyle of her people. The focus of most of her work is the intersection between life on the Crow Reservation and in the off-reservation world. She considers herself a Crow (Apsáalooke) Indian cultural archivist speaking about her experiences in today's society. Through her work, Wendy Red Star explores issues of authenticity and representation. In these pseudo-dioramas, using kitschy wallpaper, plastic animals and artificial plants, the artist poses wearing her traditional Apsáalooke (Crow) regalia, the same type of garments her ancestors wore. These photographs blur the line between stereotype and reality, from Native American as scenery to fabricated Hollywood sets, and from authenticity to Western fantasy. We’re joining @womeninthearts in celebrating #WomensHistoryMonth with the #5WomenArtists challenge.
