M o r e l 〰️ S e a s o n I sometimes think it’s rather sad that folks use common names to distinguish between the ‘consummable’ and not consummable, plants and fungi. Like calling verpa bohemica ‘false morels’ as if an organisms worth is determined by its usefulness to humans. If we use humans as a point of relativity by which we hinge another living thing’s worth, we are upholding the false belief that humans are in a position of ultimate superiority. Sometimes I liken it to my mom calling my brother Brandon and me False Brandon in situations where he outshines me socially or otherwise. Just a happy human + morels ✨ Yesterday I had one of those moments where I got SO excited about small spring things that I kind of felt wiggly and dizzy. Is it just me? Or do you all feel the magic of small happenings much more strongly in the spring? I kept daydreaming about making Tom Kha with these lovely morels, and cold brew was on sale at Trader Joe’s, and all of our baby chicks are happily eating violet leaves, and I found five dollars in my overall pockets, and that song ‘one week’ by bare naked ladies came on the radio while my windows were down and totally nailed the long part of the song where he’s singing about Chinese chicken And I saw an elderly couple smiling and holding hands on my morning walk And I tried on a bathing suit in a dressing room and one of the lights was out so it was beautiful and moody and not fluorescent and depressing And Juno covered herself in mud on a hike and looked JUST like a Mogwai and small ramps poked their way through fertile soil in the woods beyond our home, and I successfully gave someone a high five! Spring, in a basket- Dandelion Greens and Morels!!! I find a small handful of morels every year under an old apple that grows on our land- it’s a treasured spring ritual. Just enough for a delicious little morsel❤️ My favorite way to cook them is simply sautéed with a little ghee and garlic. And the Dandelion greens are just going off right now too! They’re loving all this cool, damp weather we’re having. I love to prepare them in so many ways- think of them the way you would spinach or kale.
