You’ve made it into bridge/wheel pose! Now what? Are you panicking? Chilling? Daydreaming about tacos? (Guilty ‍♀️) I get a lot of questions on here about back flexibility, so I thought I’d give you some insight into what I’m focused on in this exercise (when it’s not tacos). Of course, *there is no single “best” way to do a bridge* - different variations will shift the stretch to different parts of the body. But this is my preferred version for everyday training/aerial warmup. ‍♀️ 1) Feet are turned out slightly to relieve the lumbar spine. ‍♀️ 2) Pressing equally through all the fingers, knuckles, and heels of the hands, draw the weight forward stacking shoulders over hands. ‍♀️ 3) Elbows stay locked out (or microbent if you have hyperextention) - straight elbows are more important than straight knees. ‍♀️ 4) Head lifts to look out between the feet; this helps me engage my upper back. ‍♀️5) Breathe into the front body, think about allowing the chest and belly to expand and lengthen. • This pose is CHALLENGING. Always be warm before attempting it! I like to do 5 minutes of cardio, some hip openers, and active cobra exercises (“back sit ups”) before I get into my first bridge of the day. • Are bridges/backbending a challenge for you? Or splits? Grounding is basically balancing out the spiritual and physical energy in your body, by connecting yourself with the earth. . When you are grounded, you feel like you are here, in the physical, in the present. To be grounded gives your energy a point of steadiness and you will feel clear, centered, strong and focused. . Unfortunately, most people are unaware that they are ungrounded, and just carry on trying to survive each day. . As a society, we are fast becoming disconnected from ourselves due to technology and being busy "doing" rather than "being", that we have lost touch. . Some people are thinkers, not feelers, so you are in your head more than you are in your body. . You think about your feelings rather than feel them. . Moving/exercising your physical body is a great way to bring you into the present. Instead of sitting, stressing or focusing on the past/wondering about the future, get up and get moving. . Try walking, running, yoga, tai chi, weights, an exercise class - (outdoors in nature is an added bonus!) anything which brings you back into your body in the present moment. . . Kind of ‘off topic’ for me, but this has been on my mind since I started working from home (and spending a lot of time sitting throughout the day).

We all know that sitting for long periods of time isn’t great for us. Unfortunately it has now been linked to several diseases, including obesity, back pain, hypertension and depression [heart.org] .
‍♀️Luckily, there are easy actionable ways to move more throughout the day. Here are some of them (and none of them mean heading to the gym before or after work)!

‍♂️Basically, just get moving. Get up and stretch every hour, intentionally take the stairs, take a walk and find fun ways to integrate physical activity into your everyday. .

At the start of the month i started a steps challenge for my clients as a bit of fun and to get them moving for the month of July with a prize at the end for the winner. . Before the competition started I tracked a few of my clients steps to see what they were averaging per day. Since the competition started their steps have almost doubled on a daily basis hitting between (12000-14000). On one of the days I decided to add a little twist by giving an extra point to anyone that clocked up more steps than me which again doubled peoples steps to (18000-25000) it's amazing what a little healthy competition can do and the satisfaction of beating the trainer of course . . Now we are not going to be hitting 25000 steps everyday, but it just goes to show that when we put our mind to it we can move more. This was not just for a one off day this lasted the month of July and most people kept their steps well about 10,000.
