Archery Injury Prevention... The shoulder exercises we use for preventing injury in archery fall into two categories, for a dual approach: 1. General exercises to isolate and develop foundational shoulder movement, stability, and function. The goal is to utilize the most effective positions and variations of these exercises to target the rotator cuff, shoulder blade musculature, and shoulder movement patterns— all important components for shooting. The exercises aren’t sexy or fancy; instead, they’re proven with a clear “WHY” behind their purpose. Build your base first to support your shooting, and then we can expand into archery specific work! 2. Exercises specific to the demands and positions that archery requires. Essentially, “strength is gained in the range it is trained”. Therefore, we utilize exercises that train stability and movement in ways that directly apply to shooting a bow. The foundational work explained in number 1 is now converted into strength that is specific to archery. The exercise in the video is an example of this concept where we’re asking the rotator cuff to engage and pass through shoulder ranges similar to that of archery. ⚠️ Want to see more? Turkey season came around, and like any sane person with a flexible schedule would do, I hunted! For a few weeks I hunted hard in the mornings, then rushed home to do a days worth of work with my afternoons. I wasn’t getting in all my meals, or getting the sleep I needed, plus knowing my body doesn’t cope with stress all that well, I honestly should have known better. . So, here I am mid season all laid up, dealing with stomach ulcers once again. ‍♀️ I’m hoping with a lot of rest and dieting, I can recover quick, and catch the end of season. But if not, I’ll be happy to just be healthy again. #sickforit

What’s happening in your front shoulder while you shoot? Foremost, the larger musculature (upper trapezius & deltoid) is holding your bow up and keeping your pin on target while you aim. Strength and control in these muscles is crucial for steady aiming over numerous shots. Your rotator cuff is stabilizing the joint by keeping the ball planted into the socket. Proficient strength and function in the 4 rotator cuff muscles is important so that they can protect the joint and prevent compensation. The shoulder blade is anchored to your rib cage, providing a stable foundation for the arm to steady on. If the shoulder blade musculature is weak and unstable, you have a shaky platform. Get stronger, because nothing benefits from a poor foundation. ⚠️ Dysfunction in any of the above mechanics can lead to PAIN. Why? If one of the components is not doing its job, something else has to compensate. This process can overload certain tissues/structures and lead to poor position which ultimately causes irritation and pain. •••••• Programs in our bio to address these issues ••••••
