Holy bat specimens, Batman! Today is Bat Appreciation Day. Did you know that bats are the second largest group of mammals? With over one thousand living species, bats make up 20% of mammals worldwide! We don’t have all those species in our research and teaching collections, but we do have quite a few of them. #skypuppies #BatAppreciationDay #WildlifeWednesday
Ryan Barbour, a wildlife biologist in the @ucdavis Department of Animal Science and a former Museum intern, recently published a paper on the use of swabbing techniques to identify prey species from leftover remains found on the bills and talons of raptors. Ryan and his colleagues extracted DNA from tissue samples of songbird specimens at the Museum and compared them to the residual DNA they collected by swabbing raptors; they found more than ten songbird species in swabs from two raptor species. The development of this minimally invasive, accurate field method of dietary analysis is important to better understanding the foraging ecology of raptors, as well as predator-prey interactions and food web dynamics. Please take a look at the complete study in Wiley’s Ecology and Evolution: doi.org/10.1002/ece3.4866. #Feathursday
New blog post on @Sketchfab by @mlzbirds & @occidentalcollege undergrad Josh Medina ‘19 on how to make 3D visualizations of bird specimens (link to post in profile). You can take measurements from the 3D images and Josh is working on incorporating color next. —————————————————

It’s our birthday! Today marks one year since we launched the Museum of Wildlife and Fish Biology @Instagram page. Thank you for joining us as we showcase #biodiversity and #conservation through our natural history collections and research.
To celebrate, here’s a picture of Chancellor May and Dean Dillard’s visit to the Museum with our curator, Andy Engilis, from this time last year.

Small and big. Woodpeckers span an impressive body size range. These two are among the smallest and largest woodpeckers. The tiny and adorable piculet (genus Picumnus) to the large species of the Campephilus genus, here the Pale-billed Woodpecker.
