There was a time in my life when I was infatuated with everything Death Cab for Cutie and Benjamin Gibbard - related. And the thing that captured me the most, apart from the warm cozy sound, was Ben’s wittiness. To this day, after so many years, he remains among my favourite lyricists, having a way of twisting and turning normal words into simple, relatable and intelligent lyrics that make the heart swirl and the mind ponder. With a style that has changed a lot over the years but has steadily maintained its characteristics within the alternative rock genre, DCFC has turned me both on and off and pushed my buttons in all kinds of ways. But “Plans” eternally remains my absolute favourite album of theirs, and among my top albums ever. It is the perfect “indie” or “alternative” album, apparently soft to the touch but steadily heavy on the heart. I think of it as a “starter pack” that tackles the path of our basic existence, a solid set of songs that cleverly present various episodes in life, both highs and lows, but also in-betweens, and the most poignant emotions that come with them. Whether it’s the effervescence of young love, the slow withering of old love, the thrill of being young, the curse of getting old and the journey from one to the other, how to give meaning to routine life, but also how to deal with the certainty of death, and so much more that I cannot put into words, Ben has got it all covered on this album, lyrics wise. And with instrumentals that vary from simple cozy acoustics to ascending anthems, whirling melodies, catchy military drum patterns and a soft, emotional voice, the recipe for a soul-stirring album is complete.
