No one was injured in this grocery store fire at 2901 National Ave. We received the call at about 11:30 pm on Wednesday. The crews arrived to flames coming from the roof of the building. They began an interior attack (offensive) but had to back out and take a defensive position when they discovered the roof was compromised. The second alarm was called at about 11:50 pm. Crews knocked down the fire at about 2 am. The damage estimate to the exterior is $50k and the estimate of damage to the contents is about $100k. Today I found something in this small quaint cafe. The building it's located in used to belong to my uncle. On the main level he had a corner store / Deli named San Juan Food Market that he opened in the late 70's and in the basement he had a barber chair where he would give haircuts to family and close friends. I have fond memories of summers spent in the backyard with my cousins, fighting over who got the blue popsicle and comparing our bags of penny candy that we all got to pick out from what seemed like an endless wall of sweets, the smell of coffee always brewing in the back room and the local regulars who would come in and greet us as my aunt let them grab a milk or necessities for their kids until they had the money to pay them back. As I walked in and saw the families sitting in the cafe, the memories being made, a new counter attached to one of my uncle's old vintage display cases where he kept the cheese and deli meats, the mid century freezer still in the back, my eyes welled up with tears and it broke me. I placed an order with a knot in my throat and scanned the place trying to absorb it all. I walked out, sat in my car and cried. In some weird way it healed me. Being a mom has rocked every ounce of my being and as I step back and allow it to mould me into a better wife/mom/daughter...I realized that I have been complicating things by trying to make up for mistakes of the past in an effort to somehow fabricate something better. By trying to control the future and force moments, I'm missing out on the beauty of life in it's simplicity. Although there's a new mural painted, the inside is redone, fresh coat of paint and new light fixtures, those walls still hold the warmth of our family and they contained many years of love and laughter.
