The Okanogan National Forest is a U.S. National Forest located in Okanogan Countyin north-central Washington, United States. The western part of the forest is wetter than the dry and less temperate east. The vegetation varies similarly, from the western boreal forest, to the eastern high-elevation steppe. A 1993 Forest Service study estimated that the extent of old growth in the forest was 316,000 acres (128,000 ha), a majority of which was lodgepole pine forests. Wildfires are not uncommon in the Okanogan National Forest. Notable fires include the 2006 Tripod Complex, the 2014 Carlton Complex and the 2015 Okanogan Complexfires.

After 10 days of cold temps and overcast skies it is 75° and sunny in Jackson, Wyoming! It is finally feeling like summer so here is a summertime bird, the yellow-rumped warbler. Swipe to see that yellow rump in action! Some populations of these birds spend their winters in Central America and migrate to the Rocky Mountain West each summer. Tough gig. Although yellow-rumped warblers eat mostly insects, they have an affinity for the fruiting bodies of poison ivy and oak. I do not have an affinity for such things. Fun Fact: Blue crabs can also be found in Florida springs! You’re most likely to see them in Silver Glen Springs (pictured here) or Salt Springs in the Ocala National Forest. These springs are very special because they have slightly increased salinity levels compared to other springs. The salinity of these two springs allow blue crabs and even sting rays to live in the aquatic habitat. Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, famed Florida author and winner of the Pulitzer Prize for The Yearling, was a frequent visitor and would collect blue crab for one of her favorite recipes, Crab a la Newburg. It’s more of a rarity to see these guys in the springs these days though so don’t rely on them for dinner. Observe and appreciate from a distance. Have you ever spotted blue crab in a spring before? If so, which spring?! #floridasprings #bluecrab #saveoursprings #nationalforest #silverglensprings #ocalanationalforest #conservation #funfact #sony #hfr #sonyrxmoments
