This is Handfast Point where Dorset’s famous Jurassic Coast comes to an end. From certain perspectives, a beautiful meadow is all the eyes can see. However, what makes the area unique are the rocks that stand gloriously at the very end. Entirely made of chalk, these stunning rocks are thought to have formed 65 million years ago. A 30-min walk can easily take you to the edge of the coast, but a boat trip would offer you a better view of the rocks.

“With only the faintest beginnings of ear tufts, the two owlets are comically wide-eyed and adorably fuzzy, so unlike their intimidating mama it’s hard to think of them as the same species,” writes Stacey Cramp (@scramp) in Natural Attraction, her reflection on discovering and observing an owl family in her nearby woods, in Issue 33::EXPLORE.
Aaahhhh... Yet another coastal marvel of @australiassw. @amazingalbany's The Gap and Natural Bridge are two of the Great Southern's most breathtaking attractions. Stand on The Gap's cliff-hanging platform and watch the surging waves of the Southern Ocean collide with the cliff face below. : commonawe
A couple weeks ago the people over at @sasquatchbooks sent me an assortment of non-novel books (including those beautiful art-filled journals that I’m filling with quotes from my daughter) And I initially thought the cookbooks would be my favorite (I’ll show those in the coming days) but THIS actually is my favorite book of the bunch. .
I love love information, and I love getting cool information quickly too. My daughter and I have been reading out of “Natural Attraction: A field guide to friends, frenemies, and other symbiotic animal relationships” by Iris Gottlieb, and it’s totally my jam. I love reading about these cool-to-gross animal relationships and I love the art, too. .
Tongue-eating Isopod and the least-lucky fish of all time
Where: All oceans
Relationship status: Macabre. So gross it’s hard to even describe. This pale, six-legged crustacean sets up shop in a poor fish’s mouth, securing itself by anchoring its feet in the fish’s gills. After getting cozy, the is pod begins to suck the blood from the fish’s tongue. This uncomfortable process continues until the tongue shrivels up, loses function, and dies. Eventually it falls off, leaving the perfect spot for the isopod to take up permanent residence.
Only female isopods do this hideous deed, but all isopods are actually born male. They swim in groups into the gills of a fish and mature there—and ultimately one male switches sex. That female loses her eyesight and quickly grows big, eventually invading the fish’s mouth and settling in. Once installed, the isopod feeds off parts of the fish’s meal, particularly blood and mucus. There are hundreds of known species of tongue-eating isopods—and who knows how many more we haven’t yet met. .
I used to spend a lot of time as a kid reading books like this, and I’m kind of hoping my daughter will have the same interests. ha. .
What kind of non-novel books do you enjoy?
"Many other companies say they are “CHANGING THE INDUSTRY” - but actions speak louder than words. While they’ve been quietly moving further away from the people in our industry... we’ve been moving in closer and have been building a tribe to take it head on!
