The tiny Pacific island nation of Nauru was once known as the wealthiest country in the world. This was due to the large amount of phosphate that had formed from the droppings of seabirds. In the mid 1970s to early 80s when Nauru’s phosphate production peaked, the tiny population of 7,000 were among the richest in terms of GDP per capita and at the time were often referred to as “Kuwait of the Pacific”. They received royalties from the phosphate earnings and many Nauruans remained unemployed by choice. A large portion of the earnings were invested by the government for the future, and by the time the phosphate mines were depleted in the early 1990s, their investment fund was worth around 1.3 billion USD. However, due to mismanagement, it rapidly lost in value, and today Nauru depends mostly on foreign aid.

I met Red a few days ago on my flight to #Nauru, and we were both randomly staying at the same guesthouse.
After spending 72 hours getting to know him (awesome dude!), I wanted to share his story with you because it's VERY interesting.
He is a travel addict (like many of us) who is also on a mission to visit every country… But he takes a different approach that the average traveler.
Red is obsessed with visiting the most remote and off the beaten path places (think Afghanistan, North Korea…) as well as the world's "disputed countries and territories" — here’s a sneak peak of his story (watch full video on my FB/YT @drewbinsky)... Any other intense travelers out there who can relate to Red? Please share your stories below!
I gotta be honest, #Nauru has been a very pleasant surprise. I had low expectations coming in, and I’ve had nothing but good times so far with good company. On my flight here I met 2 cool travelers who are going to every country as well, and all 3 of us are staying at an amazing family’s house who have given us the best hospitality. The nature all around this tiny island is stunning. People are friendly. The 4G service is very fast and so it hotspotting my computer. Sure, there’s not a whole lot to do here but it’s been a nice detox to relax. The only thing I haven’t enjoyed is the food, but it’s no big deal. For a 3 day trip, Nauru has been phenomenal and I’d love to come back here again! Video all about Nauru dropping tomorrow at 11AM EST Thanks for the pic, @dhersz! Follow him as he is also going to every country
