Taken from our family 7 years today a very strong man our Dad Dillon Churchill Douglas born 13th December 1934 died very suddenly of a massive heart attack 25th May 2012. Today was my last day of Cardiology! I wrote this out the day before I started 2 weeks ago.... “Each new rotation is somewhat nerve wrecking. You never know what to expect. But this one I have been dreading it since I saw the words- Inpatient Cardiology written out on my schedule. Even typing this out, my heart rate increases and my palms get sweaty. Images of the worst day of my life flash in my head- seeing my dad in the Cardiac ICU. I’ve avoided really studying cardiology as much as my PA student career has allowed. But it has finally come to a point that I am facing my fears. And I find it no coincidence that February is American Heart Month. I once dreamed of doing my Internal Medicine rotation with my dad. He was the one who inspired me to pursue a career in the medical field; the smartest person I’ve known, yet his bedside manner and the way he treated everyone no matter what the job title, is what made him so loved. I love social media memories for reasons lk this! Last May Harli woke me up abt midnight to get her a bottle and I realized I couldn’t move so I yelled for Ki until he woke up. Being the protector he is he took control and called for help while keeping his brother and sisters out the way until my sister and the ambulance arrived. From the time I got to the hospital it’s pretty much a blur bc I was goin in and out of consciousness. I remember them telling me they had to do emergency surgery and I was there by myself with a dead phone ‍♀️ (My phone always abt dead when I’m home) I woke up the next day without my left tube that connects my ovary and a scar lk I had a c section I had had a cyst in my tube that burst and ruptured my tube which was bleeding out and if Harli hadn’t woke me up I wouldn’t be here today! MY KIDS SAVED MY LIFE and I’m even more indebted to them past life! June 8th..This was the first time I was able to pull myself together to do my hair and starting to feeling back lk myself even tho I was still on bed rest and couldn’t even lift or hold my Angel Baby!! It’s crazy bc I could’ve been gone. My family and friends could’ve been having a Remembrance Day of me! Life is short and so unexpected so love hard, laugh more, and live with no regrets! One thing for me that is never taken for granted is the physical capability for bodybuilding. Another is the love I receive from this beautiful woman next to me in this picture!! At the time of this pic we weren’t together (2001) but you best believe I was trying!! I love you more today than ever @kategrace53! I train really early and people are often taken by surprise when they hear what time I get up. For me a 3:15 AM alarm to be able to physically train and chase my passion while not allowing it to eat into family time is worth every second of it! The car accident I was in took place in 2001. As you can see in the picture it wasn’t a simple accident. I was a passenger and was ejected out of the vehicle on the interstate breaking my back, tearing both of my MCL and ACL in both knees. Reconstruction on both feet, internal bleeding, six broken ribs, and a separated shoulder collarbone given less than 10% chance to live. This pic you see here was 3 months into my recovery at Vanderbilt.. With all of that being said I have all of the motivation I need personally to push harder knowing I got a second chance. I lost one of my best friends in this accident as she and I were both passengers. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think about you or miss you I love ❤️ you Jess ! However I know heaven gained an angel and so did my family! With all of that being said I have a lot to be thankful for and a lot that motivates me to do what I do!! And I thank everyone that supports my journey !
