Yesterday I was back to where it all began, The Fort at Number Four in Charlestown N.H. The Fort is a pretty cool museum, it’s a replica of a 1740’s fortified village along the Connecticut River that was the northern most settlement of the English. I started volunteering at the Fort in middle school and help to build and then interpret a full size Native Abenaki village. I then took an interest in blacksmithing and the rest is history... It was nice being back and seeing the place. If you’re looking for something to do in the Connecticut River Valley check it out! #fortnumberfour #knowwhereyoucomefrom #americanhistory #blacksmithing #shipscoyforgehistory #nhlife #newenglandhistory #earlyamericanhistory #roots

All of our historic homes are now open for the season! Make sure to tag #HistoricNewEngland when you post pictures from your visit for a chance to be featured on our feed. ⁣ ⁣ Thank you to @ammccready for this awesome photo of Browne House in Watertown, Mass! Built in the late seventeenth century, the home was in a near ruinous state when it was acquired by our founder, William Sumner Appleton, in 1919. Browne House is widely recognized as the first fully documented restoration in America.

Out and about...Touring two historic houses off Cape today. First up is the oldest timber frame house in North America. The Fairbanks House in Dedham, Ma. was built for Jonathan and Grace Fairbanke and their family in 1637. It was occupied, preserved and passed down through eight generations of the family until the early 20th century, when it became a museum. I loved @fairbanks_house New England simplicity in structure and gardens. (Ps, There's a two-holer, interesting work items and quite possibly a haunted bedroom.) Stop by tomorrow, when I will share photos of home #2 on the tour. #historichome #historicnewengland #thisplacematters #oldhousecharacter #oldhousegardens #historictour #newenglandhistory #oldhouselove #earlyamerican #earlyamericanlife #preservation #preservationmatters #historical #antiquehome #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces

Settled by a religious community of Europeans beginning in 1644, this site's inhabitants held a view of the natural environment as a gift from God to be mastered, “improved,” and used. How did their religious relation to nature change when the environment began to fail them as a result of resource consumption? Research at our Cape Cod field school begins today... and also at a few more!⠀⠀ Croatia: Lobor #bioarchaeology⠀ Detroit: @prosperusdetroit #ethnography #immigration #publichealth⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ @umdearborncasl @capecodnps⠀ #resourceuse #sustainability #environmentalstudies #archaeology #livingofftheland #pilgrims #europeancolonists #colonists #thenewworld #colonialamerica #colonialstudies #historyofcapecod #sustainableliving #humanenvironment #landuse #landscapearchaeology #pilgrimhistory #newenglandhistory #fieldschool #archaeologicalsite #researchbased #handson #mapletrees #gravestone #colonialgraveyard #oldgraveyard

Out and about, Part 2...Touring historic homes off Cape. Welcome to the Eustis Estate in Milton, Ma. Designed by Boston architect William Ralph Emerson, this rare example of the Aesthetic Movement remained in the same family until aquired by @historicnewengland in 2012. I thought you might like a peek at some of the 16 fireplaces in this home, as well as the working kitchen, that was still in use at the time of sale and thus preserved in a way you rarely see by today's home owning standards. Can I talk about my love of Sabbath Day Houses for a second? A Sabbath Day House was used in early Connecticut as a place for church-goers to eat and get warm on Sundays between morning and afternoon services in unheated churches. Towns would have several Sabbath Day Houses, located near the church, of course. I just find these little reminders of daily life in the past, once so common and now almost completely forgotten, utterly fascinating. Connecticut has three remaining Sabbath Day Houses (that I know of, at least!) This one, in Guilford, was built by Daniel Bowen in 1734. It’s right next door to another, which is equally cute, and both are private homes now. The third is in Durham. You can see the others in my blog archives - click the link in my profile, go to the link to thesizeofctarchives.com (or just type that into your browser) and search “Sabbath” to find the posts. #thesizeofconnecticut

The Hyland-Wildman House was built in 1713 on land purchased by George Hyland in 1657. Though you can’t see in this pic, it has a classic saltbox roof and an early-18th c. period garden in the back. In reading about the 1916-17 restoration of the house, I also learned that some of its rooms are the buttery, the kitchen bedroom, and the lean-to attic. (If that doesn’t make you want to live in an early Colonial home, I don’t know what will.) . . . The house is now a museum open to the public, but if it weren’t for the signs out front, you’d never know it. That’s because as special and historic as this house looks, nearly every home on the streets near Guilford’s town green is equally eye-catching and historic. Just one reason why I love wandering around this shoreline town. . . . BTW, the Hyland House Museum is one of many CT museums, historic sites, and other institutions participating in this year’s CT Open House Day, which takes place on June 8. For my picks of what to see on that day, check out my story (saved in “CT Travel.”) . . . #thesizeofconnecticut #ct #connecticut #newengland #cthistory #newenglandhistory #ctopenhouseday #oldhouselove #archi_ologie #colonialhouse #historichouse #historichomes #cttravel #newenglandtravel #yankeemagazine #redhouse #historicpreservation #traveldeeper #historylovers #culturetrip #ctvisit
