Patterns are everywhere if you know what to look for!
#
Being able to simplify situations to their basic elements and variables is the foundation to understanding. Once you understand the variables you can then begin playing around with different values. Through trial and error you can then determine the most efficient and consistent ways to achieve a desired outcome.
#
An example of this would be a saucer pass. The variables are blade angle, where the puck is on the blade, grip, etc. Knowing the best value for each variable is key. You could just not care about the variables, hope the puck lands nice and flat but that strategy would be inconsistent.
#
The point is there are common trends in all these clips that are the same. There are variables that change depending on the situation. Notice that most dangles are very similar and not that complicated.
#
All skill is like one big tree trunk and a couple main branches coming off with smaller branches coming off that. If you follow the path starting with the trunk you’ll always know what you should do and what went wrong if you messed up.
#
You can learn how to follow one path at a time successfully but you will be stuck only understanding that specific move. Understand the tree trunk and you can follow it all the way to the top .

Weight shifts for Defensemen
#
Weight shifts are a skill any position should be able to use. This video was put together to show some examples of certain situations where a defenseman can use this skill. Situations such as at the offensive blue line, neutral zone, power play and more are all great low risk applications of this skill. The Dzone is also a great way to give your teammates extra time and space. That’s coming in a later video.
#
One thing that is important to emphasize is a weight shift seems like a stick handling skill but really it’s about 80% skating. Being able to push laterally, level to the ice is why there is so much separation after the move is complete. You’re literally pushing away from an opponent who thought you were going a different way.
#
To practice a weight shift watch yourself in the mirror or glass at a rink going from one side to the other. Then as you get better at it you can add in pauses and timing to each step. Make sure you’re upper body isn’t leaning. Your torso and head should look the same no matter where your weight is.

Forehand-backhand-forehand weight shift elimination move
Starting in a neutral position with the puck on the forehand. Weight is then shifted to backhand side as well as a backhand pump fake with the puck. Then with the defenseman committed to that side you backhand pull the puck out to your forehand. The pump fake is directed at what the defenseman is covering. The players attack or pump fake to the backhand side to leave the available space open. It’s a way to draw an already speed and gap disadvantaged player into an even more unfavorable spot.
I categorize this as an elimination move because you use it in the same scenario as a the more flashier highlights on this page. Usually you get a similar outcome which is separation from your opponent and that’s what’s important.
This move is easily practiced and should be a foundation of your game. Practice off ice and be aware of the puck moving laterally vs diagonally. Always remain in a athletic chin up position and you’ll be golden.

Independent Hands
#
As a hockey player there are many variables you control. Variables consist of head, eyes, hands, torso, legs, arms, feet, etc. All these different factors tell a story to your opponent. If we can show all the variables except our hands that we are doing one thing then we disguise what we actually want to do.
#
This ability to disguise our true intentions comes from a deep understanding of what is occurring in a situation. If we know our teammate will be open we must draw attention to ourselves so he stays available.

Elimination moves and gap control!
#
In all these clips the puck carrier realizes he is attacking a defender with a poor gap. Attack what is covered to keep the available space open.
#
“Gap control” is the term used to describe the space between the puck carrier and the defender while also factoring SPEED of both involved. In these clips the defender is not matching the speed of their opponent. This presents the opportunity for an elimination move. Elimination moves are used at the point of confrontation. The point of confrontation is the time where a faster player attempts to get around a slower player. This can be done with various movements. The defenseman is going slower which means if he misses a poke check there is nothing to fall back on. If two players had matching speeds a missed poke check would mean nothing because the players are still next to each other.
#
In the last clip McAvoy attacks the defender pushing him back. The defender afraid to get exposed by McAvoy’s speed backs up more to avoid the confrontation for as long as possible. McAvoy recognizes that if he gets around the defender there won’t be much space left so he takes the best option which is a shot from the slot.
#
Recognizing patterns and opportunities is what separates great players at all levels. Sometimes pulling off a sweet move like this is just luck because you randomly decided to use a movement in a certain situation. What is key is being able to know when and why to shoot through a defender or when to expose him, etc.
