The Rio Chama carved a 900-foot-deep multi-colored canyon of siltstone, gypsum and sandstone layers. Floating down the river provides an ever changing view of sedimentary layers traveling back in time millions of years. There are even the imprints of dinosaur tracks preserved in one side of the canyon. Northern New Mexico, and the Rio Chama Valley in particular, are known as some of the richest regions for archeology studies in the U.S. For more than three centuries—about A.D. 1250 to 1577 —this spectacular locale was home for over 1500 Pueblo Indians who built villages, dwelled, farmed and hunted game here. Co-managed by the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service, the Rio Chama offers something for everyone — paddling, trout fishing, hiking, exploring dinosaur tracks and simply relaxing in the shade. Applications for boating permits in the upper canyon can be obtained by contacting the BLM. The lake is accessible via the Williams Lake Trail from the trailhead in Taos Ski Valley. The name is in reference to William Frazer, a gold miner who staked claims in the area and co-founded the mining camp of Twining during the late 1800's. I spent yesterday driving a lot and consulting with a doctor over an ongoing medical problem and meeting with @adrift_adream to plan our road trip in Colorado next month, so today I’m treating myself to coffee out and a new bag of beans and some reading time in a dreamy space. I also decided to be nice to myself and wear shorts in public. I do not like my legs in the least and I am horribly embarrassed to expose them, but I’m trying to be kinder to myself in many ways, and that includes wearing comfy clothes during a season I abhor. So I feel completely naked and very self-conscious, but hey, I’m here! Getting myself out of the house in these is a victory, and I’m celebrating. Just a few days ago the clouds came out to play here in #abq. It was your typical summer storm where it plays Russian roulette all over the city then calms down enough to get out and check out the aftermath. I found this proud little plant so I took its picture.

Who else caught that #burque #sunset ? First shot is just a few blocks away from my house, barely got there before the clouds started to turn. The second shot is a quick edit of what the sky looked like in front of my driveway before I grabbed my camera. I couldn’t believe how yellow everything was, and no not just the clouds. Everything absorbed that golden color! Can you spot the itty bitty left over rainbow?
