Had one of those nights tonight “remember when?” Glorifying the ED, but then bringing it back to the pain.
•
And oh god, the beginning of recovery.
•
We snorted. Shit times, yeah?
•
Total shit times.

But here we are now

One of the hardest things I see in my work is loving and well-meaning mums inadvertently passing on messages of diet culture on to their daughters.⠀
⠀
My mate @nude_nutritionist has a powerful message about how we can begin to stop the cycle (full caption below):⠀
⠀
"For generations, we've been passing down disordered eating and body hate from generation to generation. She (your mother) was probably judged on her weight (instead of her merit) and yelled at (by her mother) for eating too much. She thinks she's looking after you (even though it's doing more harm than good).⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You are not a reflection of your mother (or mother-in-laws!) opinion about your body and eating habits. Even as the child, you can become the teacher. You can change how the conversation continues, and what you pass on can help change the future. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You can put an end to judgemental comments (I give specific ideas on how to do this in my book, The Nude Nutritionist). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Let's not pass down disordered eating and body hate to the next generation. #itendswithus"⠀

Tips and tricks for not screwing up kids around food and their bodies!

As a child fatphobia permeated through my parents to me. I grew up hating my fat body because they showed me my body was to be hated. Watch how you speak to children. They absorb everything.

I had a vindaloo chicken dish with couscous tonight, and someone made my plate for me (not outta ED brain, just outta convenience) and I totally caught myself doing that thing where I knew it wasn’t quite enough but didn’t wanna ask for seconds for whatever unbeknownst reason.
•
Lies. I know. I had a momentary narrative “they think this is the best amount for me so I don’t wanna surprise them by wanting more” or GASP them COMMENTING
•
Sigh. My brain. Even 5 years in—
•
Now I’m sitting here like “damn wish I had had more vindaloo.”
•
Took a shower — got out, toweling off.
•
Yo, I said. Can we go get Sweet Cow (ice cream)?
•
F*ck yeah good call, they said.
•
And life moved on. But, it’s worth noting — for anyone who experiences the same. We’re all just bumbling through this recovery stuff, learning the hard way
•
((Also I’m trying a new format tonight with my writing posts? Thoughts? Yay or nay? I’m just kinda bored by my quote app))

It's simply not OK to make comments about other people's bodies (especially strangers!) - not to them or to others. It can be hurtful & harmful in many ways & can deeply impact how a person feels about & cares for themself. ⠀
⠀
Avoid commenting on someone's body *even if your intention is to compliment someone*, it can reinforce beliefs that self-worth is based on appearance or body size, that one's appearance is more or less acceptable or that what you value most about that person is how they look. ⠀
⠀
If you are invited to comment on someone else's body it may be best to pivot & choose to focus on a non-physical appearance/body related quality that you like about them.⠀
⠀
This is clearly not an all inclusive list of situations where you probably shouldn't comment on someone's body- what should be added to this list?
Be cautious of the phrase “it’s not a diet, it’s a lifestyle.” In my experience, that’s usually a pretty big clue that it’s just a diet in disguise. .
.
It’s kind of sad, but you even need to be cautious of people promoting Intuitive Eating these days. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen people on Instagram promoting Intuitive Eating as a weight loss method. ♀️♀️ Easily one of my biggest pet peeves because that IS harmful, not to mention irresponsible. .
.
If you want to learn more about Intuitive Eating from trusted sources, check out the accounts I tagged in this post and also the “book, podcast, & blog recommendations” page I linked in my bio.

Also, be on the lookout for my COURSE launching soon!! I can’t wait to share this with you guys!
