It’s common practice in the online biz world to charge more (sometimes up to 30 percent more!!) for payment plans. It’s seen as smart, reasonable, and “protecting yourself.” But you’re effectively penalizing poorer people for their inability to pay in full. Even if it’s unintentional, you’re rewarding those with more money by helping them to spend less money. Divest from the paradigm of penalizing the poor.

It’s only happened a handful of times, but every now and then, I get hate mail. They say the same things. ‘You’re a legal kidnapper.’ ‘You help the government steal kids.’ ‘You take babies because you can’t have your own.’ ‘How dare you try to raise kids of another culture’ And someone once jury & judged me on why my only adopted child is white.
Listen, don’t feel sorry for me. I could have a private account. I could stop using certain hashtags and quit writing on blogs. I don’t have to share pictures or stories with the web— some would say I shouldn’t— and I’d never encounter this feedback.
But honestly, this is the world we live in. Someone will always say your actions are wrong, efforts aren’t good enough, or motives for right reasons.
And I’ve gotten to a place where I’m ok with that. A pastor once told my husband, don’t take the praise or the criticism too seriously, both are usually a poor reflection of the truth. {boom}
And if you are a foster parent, you are going to have to take the same road. Or if you are a teacher, social worker, missionary, nurse, first responder, and the list goes on.
.
For me, it comes down to where I seek approval and the source of where I pull life from. It’s always got to be Jesus. Then I see light. Fairly regularly, I put on an old song by Jeremy Riddle and make it my prayer,
May Your voice be louder
May Your voice be clearer
Than all the others
Than all the others
May Your face be dearer
May Your words be sweeter
Than all the others
Than all the others in my life
Please keep my eyes
Fixed on You
Please root my heart
So deep in You
Keep me abiding
Keep me abiding
Keep me abiding
That I may bear fruit

Capitalism teaches us (whether we’re conscious of it or not) to always prioritize our own needs over the collective well-being. It teaches us to do for yourself (and your family maybe) alone, and everyone else is on their own. It’s every person for themself. This way of being is soul-crushing. It forces us to ignore the suffering of other people in order to “get ahead”, and it is deeply dehumanizing. It encourages us to shun or pity people with less than us, and judge or resent people with more than us. When we practice seeing other humans as just that, human, it’s pushing back against this capitalist norm. It’s possible to account for the differences in our lived realities while not reducing someone else to a stereotype about “poor people” or “rich people.” FREELY: An Anti-Capitalist Guide to Business

Getting as much work done as possible in as little time as possible is a deeply held capitalist norm. Most of us (self-employed or no) sprint through our lives this way, always trying to maximize our results and minimize our efforts. It’s an inherently extractive paradigm. When you’re an employee who works for a boss, the boss is the one trying to extract your labor, but when you work for yourself, you’re both the boss and the laborer, the extractor and the extracted. Let yourself slow down. Be your own good boss. You’re not too late. There’s no rush. Divest from the paradigm of hurry up.

We’re pretty well trained not to talk about money. It’s rude to discuss your family’s wealth (or lack thereof); in some cases it’s actually prohibited to divulge the amount of your salary. Who benefits from this secrecy? What do we gain by participating in it?
Start talking about money with your friends, family, and clients. It might be uncomfortable at first, but it helps us to see the underpinnings of the myths we believe about how money works.
A few years ago I started asking any friend who was buying a house how they got the money to pay the down payment. Nearly every single one admitted they received help from family to be able to afford buying a house. If we dig a little deeper, most will point to some dishonorable source of how the family came to have that money.
But we don’t hear those stories very often. The ones we hear are of bootstraps and hard work. Being transparent about our money, and asking those close to us to do the same, isn’t rude; it’s radical.

I’ve only ever been on one high-pressure sales call, but it left me reeling for days afterwards. Years ago, a biz coach I thought was a perfect fit for me (feisty, colorful, feminist, etc) dropped the bomb of her $12,000 price tag halfway through our inquiry call. I balked. This was waaaayyyyy more money than I ever imagined her charging. But she was prepared for my sticker shock with a barrage of lines: “If you care about your growth, you’ll find a way.” “You’ll make the money back! I’ll teach you my strategy!” (**Spoiler alert: The strategy is to charge your own clients $12K.**) And finally, “You can’t afford not to.” These lines are an operation in manipulation. If you have to shame or strongarm your clients into paying you, that’s not anti-capitalist.

Join me in a prayer as you see this photo. Pray for all the young people in our country South Africa: I pray for their struggle to find work and purpose and I pray for them to find a way, to rise up and to have a vision for the future. Dear God shine a light on them and bring answers and a way. Opening tomorrow, Don McCullin's retrospective. I feel utterly inadequate to post any of his great work and the 260 handmade prints in the show, as it would do them no justice. The brutality of fact of his work and the stunningly toned prints are from an era that photography is above all craft, not a snapshot. An analogue process of making that is miles away from digital. In many ways digital photography democratised the medium but in the process lost its soul.
McCullin's photographs are soulful and heavy with responsibility to the people depicted. Not easy to digest and despite their technical beauty they are an exposé of the ugliness of humanity but his gaze is questioning and puts us in many uncomfortable situations, where we get to question our own motives for looking at the work. It's not easy but it's necessary.
