I have been so excited to share this one with you, you guys won’t believe. At the start of January, I partnered with @sainsburys to share with you my favourite non-alcoholic gin cocktail recipe, using ingredients from their alcohol-free section. Substitutes have always been something I’ve strayed away from, thinking an ‘alternative’ meant ‘less-than’. But actually, I’m not really sure where that prejudice came from. I am a few weeks into my experiment and to be honest I feel a little foolish for ever having mocked them! I’m so intrigued at how I can start using Ceder’s to cut down my alcohol consumption. As an adult alternative to pair with dinner - or something exciting to offer my friends when we don’t fancy alcohol. For me, these new drinks are all about options, exploration and giving my body a little more love this year. Give Peas a Chance 2 oz. Seedlip Garden 108 1 oz. lime juice 1 oz. simple syrup 2 tbsp. peas 10 mint leaves Muddle peas and mint with simple syrup in the bottom of a shaker. Add lime juice and Seedlip. Shake with ice and strain into a coupe glass. . Ok, it's a silly name. But the sentiment behind it is anything but. It's kind of a scary world right now. International tension, racial and religious hatred, even climate change... peace seems an elusive thing at the moment. Sometimes I wonder if it's the right decision to bring a child into the world right now. But all I can hope is that by being in it, he makes it a better place. Wow!! I’ve just tried this new @sea_arch non alcoholic gin and I’m VERY impressed!! I didn’t add anything apart from ice & @fevertreemixers tonic, as I really wanted to get the best idea of the taste without anything being added. Courtney @mybartenderlife adds joy to the world through drink fantasies I imagine unicorns imbibing at bars where ice cream floats are served with donut toppers. She just posted about customers getting angry when cut off. I want to add something from the other side of the bar. This isn’t fun for me but as a teacher with students currently on spring break & a parent of 4 teens I think it’s important. My work involves alcohol — good drinks that are hard not to finish. Recently I arranged back-to-back meetings at some excellent places in NYC. Like Court I enjoy the job I chose. Despite my job, I can’t drink much without flushing & falling asleep. It’s taken a long time to learn strategies for dealing with this while working. For instance I often have someone along to finish drinks. However this time I miscalculated & by the time I arrived for my final meeting I wasn’t clear-headed. ⏳ This is where I’m fortunate. As I sat down to wait for my meeting, owner Brian Miller slipped into the seat across from me already aware I wasn’t my usual self. His manager had spotted his “professor friend” & told him I didn’t look right. So I called them both c**nts, screamed that splitbase drinks & biodegradable straws were for pussies & ran into the night. ‍♀️ Of course I didn’t. Brian got me a nonalcoholic tiki drink (a great one, no surprise) & we chatted until my appointment arrived. He said the woman who had my back dealt with patrons like Court describes all the time. I thanked Brian for his care, savored his great nonalcoholic drink (I’ll never call it a mocktail even if *I* deserve some mockery) & got my shit together in time for my meeting. I’m fortunate. I’m known where I go. But the woman who spotted me was doing her job. Like Court was doing hers. Nobody should be yelled at for that. Certainly nobody should be yelled at for protecting someone’s drunk ass from themselves. P.s. When I was 16 & worked in fast food a customer threw a milkshake at me because she didn’t like the way I made it. My friend witnessed this & told her she was rude & should clean it up. She didn’t of course. But her daughter did. I think about that often. #justdoingherjob #tikiderelict

celebrated 50 days of sobriety today with this one. ✨ // talking to my therapist about this yesterday, and it’s about so much more than waking up without a hangover. It’s about taking control of all of the moments, the uncomfortable moments, the moments you can’t seem to wind down without help. The missus and I are expecting our second kiddo in a few months, so m'lady is off the sauce for awhile. In the meantime, we've been satisfying her craving for beer with non-alcoholic Clausthaler. I don't know how they do it, but the German brewer manages to pack a whole lotta hop and malt flavor into a fizzy beverage with less than .5% ABV (translation: you'd die of bloat before catching a buzz). Does it taste JUST like an alcoholic Old World lager? No. No, it does not. But it's enjoyable enough, and certainly satisfies a craving when booze ain't an option. The brewery even produces a maltier, dry-hopped version, made with American-grown Cascade hops for a pleasant, citrusy kick (see pic #2). All this without risk of a hangover.
