TOOLS // Happy Monday all! Despite the rain hope everyone is having a good start to their week. My Mondays are usually about admin and trying to plan my week. Today has been a bit different. I taught yoga to one of my private clients. Followed by coffee and catch up with a good friend. Followed by slow and nourishing self practice.
.
Today's practice was ground based, lots of yummy stretches and gentle twists, moving to the rhythm of deep, nourishing belly breaths.
Followed by little bit of playtime with that little bright ball and cheeky gluteus and piriformis. There was nothing yummy about that, rather opposite. But I can tell you now that it feels so good after. I ended my time on the mat with some Pranayama and a long supported Savasana, wrapped up in a blanket and a bolster under my knees.
.
It's taken me ages to get to this point in my practise. Where I don't need to prove anything to myself. Where my practise doesn't have to mimic that of a studio based 60min strong flow class. Where all that I need to do is just show up on my mat and trust, move with deep awareness and intuition. Body is awesome, it carries deep wisdom. To me, showing up regularly, tuning inwards and listening to sweet whispers of that inner wisdom, getting to know your true self, is Yoga.
.
Through the practise of Yoga, using tools of Yoga (movement, breath, awareness, mindfulness, sitting practise...) we get better at leaving ego on the shelf, we get better at dealing with change and our obstacles. This brings about the transformation, which further deepens our relationship with ourselves. It helps remind us who we really are, and find contentment in each moment of our lives.

MOTHER // Love this - it’s so very true!
.
When the new baby is born we tend to shower it with attention and love. Gifts and cards arrive, friends and relatives cannot wait to come and meet the baby. In all that celebration and excitement of the new life arriving safely into the world we seem to forget one person that made it possible - the mother
.
She needs as much love and attention as the newborn. She needs to be held, supported and nurtured by her family and friends, and given time and space to start arriving and flourishing in her new role as a mother. She will love all the flowers and the cards arriving, she will love seeing her friends and family meeting her baby for the very first time. But what she might need the most is some space, a quiet time, meals cooked and brought to her, her older child (children) taken out or entertained so that she can spend some quality time with her new baby and time to rest.
.
One of the things I love about teaching Postnatal Yoga to mums and babies is being able to hold that safe space for them. A space for them to be just who they are. We do practise yoga, they get to stretch tired bodies, they start to regain strength and tone the muscles. But they also get to talk and share with one another. It's not aways smiles and giggles, there are sometimes tears shed. Tears of relief realising that its ok to feel exhausted, ok to not know what to do, ok to have baby that cries a lot, ok to have worries and doubts. They realise by sharing that they are doing great and that they are being the best mums they can be to their precious babies.
.
If you are in a need of some calm and space with your new baby (or if you wish to buy a gift for a new mum) I teach Postnatal Yoga for mums and babies every Thursday in Muswell Hill:

This is how I move and do vinyasa - slow, controlled, fluid, present
.
There is no need to be a athlete, acrobat, dancer or contortionist to learn how to move in this way. If I can do it, you can do it too! ♡

LISTEN // A little food for thought: how often do you listen without judgement? What does this mean to you?
.
When we are with a friend or a family member, when they are pouring their heart out to us, we listen without judgement. But can we honestly say we do the same with ourselves?
.
When sitting still, meditating, or perhaps flowing in our yoga practise, do we listen intently and let what’s showing up to be? Or do we react by trying to rationalise and/or make better?
.
This is a challenge in my own practise: to be still without judging, or making better, wishing to go away. To accept all the stuff, the good and the bad. To simply be present and get comfortable with feeling it all. To soften into what actually is.
.
Regular practise opens an enquiry - I don’t need to know the answer but rather it makes me be curious with myself and how I feel. I wouldn’t say the more I do it the easier it gets, instead I become more compassionate with myself, more aware and awake to what is now.
