DANCE BOOK | ODISSI : A Year On. Of course I have an illustrated Odissi journal! Every day after dinner I would wait for sleep with a pen in hand alternately dancing on my bare bedroom floor, recounting the days’ new movements and then committing it to paper with one-line diagrams in various states of contortions. DANCE | ODISSI : A Year On. I’ll always gravitate back to the candidness and honesty of this clip, how it succinctly captured the squeamishness of my learning and the camaraderie in a gurukul. The passion and diligence which enveloped me for almost a month was heavily intoxicating, so much so that I carried it forward way after the workshop and ultimately, with no reservations, coaxed me to shift to Odissi from Bharatanatayam. To be cocooned in a place whose very existence, creed and name is rooted in the pursuit of dance and to share this environment with brilliant women who broke every dancer stereotype was an infinite lesson on grace - both corporeally and spiritually. How bodies do the talking during daytime, and with equal candor and intelligence propel into post-dinner debates touching on the roots of femininity, gender fluidity in dance, untethering religious anchors in classical Indian dances and disparaging elitism in the dance community. Between vats of freshly brewed lemongrass tea, an ocean of sweat and reverberating laughter bodies ached, minds stretched and hearts swelled in the name of Odissi.
