Shout out to my dude Raul for showing me how to place an IV line & draw blood. Some nights I get the lucky draw to be pulled to work in the ER, and when I do I make it known that I’m there to learn! The ER is one of the best places to learn nursing skills, from either the nurse or the tech. *full video will be posted in story. Side note; he normally would have gloves on & cleanse the site with alcohol or chloraPrep first. •

TAKE A BREAK. Re-charge. Re-set. You deserve it. Currently checking out and heading to the airport ✈️ from a much needed break!! Can you work the whole 12 hours, give handoff to the next RN, walk off the unit and completely let go of the whole shift you endured
If you answered yes ... share some tips! ☺️
.
For us - since we are both nurses we have trouble separating personal from professional life. ⚕️⚕️
.
We constantly have to remind ourselves to step away and allow ourselves to take time from work. By doing this... it gives us a chance to re-charge and re-set. It doesn’t have to be an actual getaway but something that allows you to remove yourself mentally / physically from the intense high energy profession. How do you guys take breaks✨. .#nursing #studentnurses #newgradrn #icu #nursingstudent #rnbsn #rnmsn #nursingskills #scrublife #wearfigs #criticalcarepair #nurse #nurses #murse #SICU #CTICU #registerednurse #rn #rns #rnlife #healthcare #medical #medicine #criticalcare #cabo #cabosanlucas #leblancloscabos
Interview Season
. .
Around this time last year, we were months away from graduation, finalizing our resumes, and applying to new grad RN residencies. We wanted to share a few interview tips, questions that we prepared for as well as the questions we were asked. .
.
Interview Questions We Got Asked!
.
▫️How can you contribute to the culture of the unit?
.
▫️How will you be a beneficial asset to the unit outside of direct patient-care? .
▫️Tell me about a time when a group member was not pulling their weight. .
▫️Describe your routine from the beginning to the end of your shift.
.
▫️ Where do you see yourself in 5 years? .
.
TIPS: .
Story Bucket - We know that you have had endless learning opportunities that you could share but narrow down to 2-3 stories that display different qualities about you.. try to pull from clinical experiences! .
Unless you’re a cool cucumber… you will be nervous. You’ve been awaiting for this moment for what seems like eternity and now its here. What helped us to get back to a cool and collected self (well at least a coherent self) was to remind yourself of that special YOU quality that set you apart from other candidates!
.
Share with us any interview questions or tips you have! .
.

Yesterday I started my first #IV in a real arm! Thanks for being a great patient @_nataliekiyomi! And how cute & supportive are my classmates & instructor!? I was a phlebotomist for almost 2 years so I feel pretty comfortable working with needles. Some tips for starting IVs (may be applied to #blooddraw as well!):
Assess the arm distal to proximal for all possible veins & #palpate, don’t just look. You want veins that feel spongey or bouncy & travel as straight as possible.
Little tricks to help find veins - hang the arm in a dependent position & let gravity do its job to promote blood flow, have the patient lightly clench their fist, ensure the #tourniquet is tight enough, warm the patient up or put a warm pack/cloth on the area to encourage dilation of the vein, use an alcohol swab & briskly rub the area to irritate the vein just enough to see/palpate it.
Avoid valves where the vein branches off. This can cause difficulty with insertion of the #needle or threading of the #catheter.
Have all your supplies prepared...down to loosening caps, ripping pieces of tape, & ‘un-sticking’ the #dressing.
Get your angles down. Insert the #needle at 15 to 30 degrees. Once you see a ‘flash’ of #blood, lower the device as much as possible & thread the catheter.
Don’t forget to flush! This will ensure patency of the IV. We didn’t do that here in this video because we didn’t have flushes available (catheters were removed right after insertion).

Nursing Professional Portfolio⚕️⚕️
.
✨ Like any profession, take pride in your hard work, accomplishments, and service by compiling it into a portfolio. Looking back at each of our professional portfolios is like taking a walk down nursing school memory lane!! .
We consider theses the ESSENTIALS of a nursing portfolio:
.
1. WHITE COAT PICTURE: Totally up to you, but for us we considered it a must-do bc we took in consideration just how many applicants each nurse manager had to interview.
.
2. COVER LETTER / RESUMÈ: A cover letter = letter of INTENT (reasons why you want to work at that particular health system/ speciality unit). It gives your nurse manager (if they read it) a chance to not only see that your qualified (via resume) but also passionate (via cover letter)
.
3. CERTIFICATIONS: If you had the chance to get certified in BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, ECG/Pharmacology, etc... Certifications aren’t required, but shows you’ve gone above and beyond. .
4. LETTERS OF REC: For ⚕️’s portfolio he included ICU preceptors, clinical instructors, and nursing faculty was included. For ⚕️ L.O.R’s she included a letter from the Dean of the nursing school and a clinical instructor. Remember to ask EARLY!
.
5. VOLUNTEER & COMMUNITY SERVICE: The great thing about this professional is that we all like to help & care for others!!Keep track of events you’ve participated in + your responsibilities during these services. .
6. AWARDS
.
7. PRESENTATIONS: We added our EBP Research report!
.
Each nurses portfolio is different because every nurses journey is different. We spent many hours utilizing the @apple application ‘pages’ to create, edit, re-edit, and finalize. It takes time! But having a well-prepared portfolio will impress your future employers!! Comment or message us if you have any suggestions to add to the portfolio essentials. We’d love to hear from you! ✅ TAG a nursing student below who is applying below! .
