Apartment Houses, 1923, was one of Edward Hopper’s early paintings and it was his first oil painting to enter a museum. It was exhibited in and purchased from the 1923 annual exhibition of the Pennsylvania Academy.
It’s quintessential Hopper with a solitary figure in a window. Her actions are hidden behind the curtain so you don’t know what she’s doing. Maybe she’s the maid or maybe she owns the house. It was painted at his Washington Square studio in Greenwich Village where he lived until his death in 1967.

Happy 77th Birthday Nighthawks! A page in Edward and Josephine Hopper’s journal shows that Nighthawks was completed on this day in 1942. It was sold a few months later to the Art Institute of Chicago for $3,000! Still one of the most recognized paintings in American art.
