It’s true. A picture’s worth a thousand words. This @tmagazine cover from 2007 was what inspired me to create in 3D and 18K my first Manhole Cover Pendant. I was taken with the image- imagine this was real?! All that solid gold, streets paved in gold, the promise people believe in trying to ‘Make it Here’. I loved the idea of taking an industrial object, one that mostly goes unnoticed unless it EXPLODES and makes the news and turning it into something luxurious. This was perfect for CAD. At the time I was designing jewelry for Avon and traveling to China 2X a year to produce our line. This is what inspired the engraving on the backside (swipe) This piece spoke volumes to me about NYC and adding ‘Made in NY by New Yorkers’ brought it altogether and made it personal. I had been dipping in and out of the Diamond District since I was a teen getting to know the folks @myrontoback the casting houses, a few local jewelers. I’d make a one of a kind every so often even though my full time job was in fashion jewelry. I loved finding a new source, thinking of all the stone dealers, polishers, and amazing talent working in these tiny studios packed into just a few blocks. I wanted to know more, I wanted to be part of the fabric, I was fascinated. I wanted these people who I had always walked amongst with admiration to be part of my story. This is an homage to them, to the district, the city and the craft. To date I still haven’t read the actual article it has to do with soaring prices in the city (we hadn’t crashed yet). The permanence of precious metal and is also important to this piece. The city evolves but some things will always remain. With ❤️& respect
