I have been doing the #PositivityProject for over 1 year now. In that time, I've been fortunate to "meet" some pretty incredible people. @ian.luebbers of @hollyandkavanagh, who passed away suddenly on June 11th, was only 24-years old. That's only 13 years older than me. He was a very well known #WorldChampion #irishdancer, & though I never had the pleasure of meeting him, I always get vibes from the people I talk to. This is what I learned from Ian:
#1: He was incredibly kind & respectful. Not everyone is interested in answering an 11-year-old's constant questions. But he was patient with me.
#2: He didn't seem focused on his trophies. While he deeply seemed to ♥️ dancing, he was not someone who spent a lot of time talking about what he'd won. He was more interested in sharing the knowledge that he had gained. He seemed to want to pass on that knowledge.
#3: He didn't strike me as loving all the pomp & circumstances of competitive dancing. He seemed more drawn to the simpler things about it There were a lot of things he mentioned in my original interview that talked about "mindset". At the ⏲️ he was training for World's (which he won). He wrote that he was "letting go of attachment to the outcome." I ♥️'d that.
#4: You can always tell so much about a person by the outpouring of ♥️ from friends, family & teachers. I have read every single post that I can find. Clearly, Ian made his impact.
I lost someone suddenly in Jan 2018, & I know the feeling of the world stopping & moving on at the same time. It doesn't seem fair. Ian, I wish I'd gotten the chance to meet you. I wish I'd seen you dance in person. Thank you for giving me the chance to tell your story, even if it was just a small piece.
This was his advice for dancers: "Whether you win the World’s or fall off the stage, nothing that happens in dancing - good or bad - reflects your inherent worth. It all just reflects your mindset & how you see yourself. Change the way you see yourself and you’ll change the way you dance."
