Many pilgrims go there everyday to pray and, truth be, being there feels like being in a very sacred place. I loved it .

I was 18 years old when I logged onto YouTube and searched “sirens in israel” to watch videos of rockets falling from the sky during the Lebanon-Israeli war. It was 2006, and it was the first time in my life I could use the internet to witness war in a foreign country. . . I never thought twice about Israel before that time. I had become observant to Judaism only 5 years earlier. Those years were intense, a 180 degree switch from secular to religious. Something that wasn’t my choice, and I’m still grappling with today, many years later. I learned a lot during those few short years. I learned about #Shabbat, #kosher, #chassidus and #Torah. I learned how to wash my hands before eating bread and the blessing that goes with it. I learned the #Hebrew #aleph-bet, and how to read in Hebrew. . . But what I don’t remember, is how I learned to love Israel. I barely knew about it and yet there I was, tears streaming down my face, that day in 2006. How could that be? How could I long for something I didn’t even know? The feeling was visceral. It was a fire lit in my belly, my mind started to blank, my hand shook, my chest tightened. This was not fear, it was sadness and anger. It was wanting and desire. It was something much bigger than me; I might never understand it. . . So if you ask me, why are you painting #Jerusalem Sefira? It’s because I love it. The ancient architecture, the spiritual connection to my people, the alleyways of the old city; they give me life and purpose while I live in exile tucked away in the Pacific Northwest. So I paint it. . .

Photographed on assignment or a forthcoming issue of National Geographic Magazine… Fallen columns and collapsed walls – the remains of a magnificent complex of Islamic buildings, destroyed in the earthquake of 749 CE – lie scattered just outside the SE corner of the Al Aqsa Compound in the Old City of Jerusalem. The complex was apparently constructed during the reign of the Umayyad caliph El-Walid I (705-715) and is similar to other fortified Umayyad palaces on the fringe of the desert in Transjordan and Syria. But unlike those, the palace in Jerusalem – a fortified city – was not protected by towers. This palace measures 96 x 84 m. The Umayyad’s capital was in Damascus, but it was not realised that great importance was attached to Jerusalem, and that important religious and governmental buildings were built there. In the first half of the 19th century, the Jewish community in the Old City of Jerusalem was in extreme poverty. Very few Jewish were landowners, while most of them had to rent their apartments. In 1857 a group of Jewish immigrants from the Netherlands and Germany, including Rothschild, purchased the area of Batei Mahseh in Jewish Quarter in order to build apartments for poor people.
