This project in Memphis – Crosstown Concourse - is the most interesting new development I’ve seen in America. It sits just east of downtown and is notable in two ways:... 1) It's a lead example of adaptively reusing a large industrial space. The massive 1.2-million-square-foot project was built in 1927, and used for 7 decades to package & ship Sears' mail order products. It was shuttered in the early 1990s, but was reopened in 2017 following major renovations.... 2) Crosstown has been branded as a “vertical urban village” To say it's “mixed-use” is an understatement; it accommodates every living need within one structure. At ground level is a shopping mall with restaurants, bars, coffee shops, groceries, etc. The middle floors are office space. The top floors are residential. Scattered throughout the project are more workaday amenities – a doctor’s office, a dentist, a gym – and in the future Crosstown will have a theater and school. So someone could live work & play there without ever leaving.... Crosstown could thus become a common development model nationwide. While traveling the Midwest, I saw countless, even larger empty factories that could be readapted this way. But more broadly, the “vertical urban village” idea could be applied to any skyscraper. Si has passejat pel barri de les Corts segurament t'has fixat en aquesta façana modernista. @escjosep te la descobreix: "Antiga fàbrica de les Cristalleries Planell, situada a la cantonada dels carrers d'Anglesola i del Doctor Ibáñez, al barri de les Corts, construïda pel mestre d'obres Josep Graner i Prat el 1913. La façana té elements de tradició modernista, com la decoració en trencadís a la porta d'entrada en la qual s'hi llegeix el nom de l’empresa. En aquesta fàbrica s'hi elaboraven tot tipus d'objectes de vidre i va mantenir-se en marxa fins el 1957. Les Cristalleries Planell també van ser escenari de la «vaga dels nens» el 1925, en què un nen d'onze anys, Francesc Pedra, es va aixecar contra els abusos i l'explotació infantil que patien a la fàbrica.  La rehabilitació de l'edifici, que es trobava en molt mal estat, va anar a càrrec d'Harquitectes, amb Josep Ricart com a responsable.
