This is a devotional image of Xipe Totec, “The Flayed Lord,” also translated as “The Bearer of the Skin.” He is the Lord of Spring, a manifestation of corn, and the patron of gold and silversmiths. He is a manifestation of Tlaltauhqui Tezcatlipoca, The Red Tezcatlipoca, and as such is the Lord of the East. From his skin grows corn; during an ancient famine, he flayed himself and let his skin drop to the earth, where it grew into maize, in order to feed the starving people. He wears the skin of a flayed man, its hands hanging from his wrists. He danced on the skull of the earth, and where he spins his heels maize and crops grow. He holds a red mirror in one of his hands, in which he sees the truth of men’s hearts, a sacrificial knife in another, with which he flayed his own skin, and a Mist Rattle in his left hands, whose gentle sound announcing the coming of the rains. To either side of him stand a man and a woman, who worship before his mysteries. His flayed skin is a sign of his own sacrifice, but it is also an image of the sacrifice of the corn. When an ear of corn is prepared to be eaten, its husk is ripped off, like the skin of Xipe Totec. He is the earth, which, in the dry season appears dead, like the dead skin he wears, but which underneath is alive, like the man who wears the skin, with the seeds awaiting to grow with the coming of the rains. He represents the fertile earth which grows bright and green every Summer, the duality of life and death, which cannot be divided from one another, for the green of Summer must always die, with the revolving of the seasons. He wears a garment of paper, for paper is like skin, the outer layer which conceals the truth of life and death.
