Some bowls bend and others stay true.. I have a soft spot for the movement and organic feel of a warped bowl and usually carve bowls wet and dry them fast to make the most of this natural phenomenon. The amount of movement depends on several factors - how fresh or 'green' the wood is has the biggest impact.. the greener the wood the more potential for movement. How much you get depends on the drying conditions - too dry and warm and the bowls will crack (sometimes almost tearing themselves apart) Reasonably high humidity and low temperature and the bowls should stay true. The vast majority of my work is large scale, bespoke commissions for designers, much of which is unable to be shown to the public. I use carved side tables as a way to explore ideas, almost like functional maquettes. Sometimes forms are repeated, often they are one of a kind. They also afford me the challenge to come up with designs that partner with the material. In this case an organic but structured form that rolls in and out to catch and highlight the natural black band in this piece of tulip poplar.
