NEVER SHARED BEFORE ⠀ A year ago I was in a very frustrating place. It felt like dancing stopped bringing me joy. Some days I had to drag myself in the studio to practice, and often performances were bringing more of annoying than satisfying feeling. ⠀ For a long time I was refusing to acknowledge it to myself. How so?! What an absurd thought?! I’m a full time dancer, what else can I dream about?! ⠀ But truth was that dancing became my job. Job that I was doing very well, never sacrificing the quality of my show, even despite my inner dancer was in tears, and asking for more. ⠀ Part of the answer I found at Belly Dance Life Podcast ⠀ Have you ever noticed how often our guests, answering to the final signature question, refer to the music as their source of dance passion? Only after hearing it a dozen of times, I realized how much I was underestimating the power of music. ⠀ At that time I was having multiple shows every week. Typically clients have some requests for their favorite songs. It’s not a big deal to include 1-2 songs in the show, but if you have several shows in a week, you end up building your practice only around those songs to be ready for the weekend.‍♀️ ⠀ How could I have expected myself to be enthusiastic, if the music wasn’t really matching my artistic taste? Of course, there were some exceptions, and some songs even stayed in my regular repertoire, but it was very rare. Mostly it was songs that I would never pick to dance to. ⠀ These days I always make sure that my training playlists includes mostly songs that DO inspire me. I don’t care if they are traditional, or fusion, Egyptian or Greek, “appropriate for professional belly dancer”, or cheesy. The main criteria is they inspire me to move. ⠀ It’s such a small adjustment but such a huge impact. I simply felt like doors to the creative flow got opened again. ⠀ I even feel like sharing my monthly playlist updates online. Maybe some of those songs will inspire another dancer in a similar situation. What do you think? Would you be interested? I sometimes feel like I put too much content on you guys, so might as well check. ⠀ Song from the video is called Zilevo

IF YOU WANT TO BECOME A PROFESSIONAL DANCER ⠀ Many of you have shared dreams about becoming professional dancers and teachers. Here are some thoughts for you to consider for your future activities. ⠀ Did you realize that all professional athletes focus not only on their main sport activities, but also spend a lot of time in the gym? Well, professional dancers are partially athletes too, so let’s figure out why it is important. ⠀ There is a difference between dancing for yourself, as a hobby, and dancing professionally. Once you decide to get on the path of a professional dance career, you start training more, you start demanding your body to perform more complicate moves, and expect it to keep moving even if exhausted. And although in short term periods it may seam totally doable, in a long-term perspective you have to provide an additional support to make sure your body is able to do what you are asking it to do. Otherwise injuries are inevitable. ⠀ Conditioning includes three physical components: ✅strengthening your muscles, ✅developing cardio, and, of course, ✅stretching. All three components are equally important, and proper balance is crucial. That’s why every time I receive a message saying: “I want to become a professional dancer and perform at events. What should I do?” - I typically reply: “Go to the gym”It’s not about losing weight. But it’s about preparing your body for professional dance activities. ⠀ Good news is that you can do conditioning exercises at home, and also they don’t include only boring burpies or leg lunges, lol. The beautiful thing about belly dance is that a lot of useful stretches are already build in into this dance form. That’s why it is important to come back to basics in each training session, and that was a reason why I included a lot of “simple” but useful exercises in our first challenge video.☝️ ⠀ Who enjoyed doing the first video? Are you excited to find out what Esmeralda prepared for you? Comment YES below ⠀ P.S. There is still time to upload your combo video! Did you realize that certain songs may sound as if they have phrases from a different language? For instance, whenever I put on this beautiful Arabic song Bos 3ala El Halawaa, I keep hearing Russian word “halyava”, which is a slang word for free stuff. And imagine for a non-Arabic audience who is not familiar with belly dance at all I guess that may be the most memorable part of the show for someone, lol Did you ever have any funny situations with songs that “sounds similar” to other languages? OUT OF MY COMFORT ZONE ⠀ I’m a strong advocate of never stop learning, and developing your dance skills regardless of what level you are currently at. Do you agree? Also you probably noticed that I love working on choreographies from other professionals as much as my own. ❤️❤️❤️ ⠀ Sadly many dancers feel obligated to show exclusively their own dance creations once they reach certain level, or start teaching, but I believe there is no shame in studying from other artists. Of course, keep it within professional etiquette, like not pretending to be the author❌, or just copping a choreo from YouTube and performing it in public❌. ⠀ Why is it important to learn choreographies from other artists? The list of positive effects is almost endless, but here are a couple: enriching your dance vocabulary with new combos and moves that you would never come up with by yourself learning to listen to music in a different way breaking your regular movement patterns (similar to the first point, but it’s more on the neurological and psychological level) feeling always like a student so you maintain a hunger to develop your skills even further challenging yourself with new technique and styles (usually teachers talk not only about the sequence during workshops/classes) it’s an incredible source of inspiration for your own future creations great satisfaction once you master a new unusual routine, hence providing extra motivation to keep going ⠀ Do like working on choreos from someone else? How often do you practice dance routines that are not yours? Looking forward to reading your comments! ⠀ ____________________ P.S. Many thanks to @uzbek_dance_in_moscow for sharing this dance with me. Now I keep dreaming about visiting Uzbekistan to explore the culture and this dance style even further! #sendingtotheuniverse ⠀ Location: @shopcasachic ⠀ #ianadance #uzbekdance #ianadancetraining

LESS IS MORE ⠀ Are you scared of improvising on stage? Here is an extra dance tip for you. ⠀ ✅When we are nervous, the tendency is to rush. But even when you have an actually fast song to dance to, it doesn’t mean that you need to shake all the time. Slow down in your movements. See if instead of four hip drops, one big undulation can do the trick to the same music part. Such visual “pauses” and moments of calm add texture to your dance, make it varied and interesting to watch, as well as give your audience’s eye a chance to rest and refresh their attention before the next killing part! ⠀ ✅Same way as with speed itself, don’t rush to show all belly dance movements you’ve learnt. You don’t need to pack dozen of movements in 5 seconds of your improv to make it impressive. Imagine you have guests who came over for a dinner. Would you serve appetizers, main dish and desert all at the same time? ‍♀️Probably not. Same applies to dance. Stretch your movement vocabulary throughout the dance, introduce a new idea one at a time, and give an opportunity for your audience to actually see it. And then they think they got it, surprise them with something new! ⠀ Have you been that “host” who tries to impress the audience with all movements at once? ⠀ #ianadancetraining #ianadance #bellydanceimprov ⠀ Photo by @pedrobonatto
