I had the amazing honor of meeting Director and renowned Art Collector, Nike Davies Okundaye, at her gallery @nikeartgallery in Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria. Nike Art Gallery, a four story indoor and outdoor space filled with paintings, mix media works, and sculpture, is the largest art gallery in West Africa! Ms. Nike was generous and welcoming to me and my friends. It was also a great surprise to find Ms. Okundaye was on the same two flights as mine heading from Nigeria to New York. On our journey we got the opportunity to chat about the arts, the need for more woman artists, and the current lecture she’ll be giving at the @smithsonian for their new exhibition “I Am: contemporary women Artist of Africa.” Fun fact: My middle name is Nike and we’re from the same state #osunstate ! The Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove is a sacred forest along the banks of the Osun river, just outside the city of Osogbo, Osun State ,Nigeria. The Sacred Grove was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. Most of what we see in the grove today is attributed to the Austrian artist, Sussane Wenger and her followers. In the 1950s, she moved with her husband to Nigeria when he was offered a position at the University of Ibadan.The Osun-Osogbo sacred grove is the abode of the Osun goddess known as the goddess of fertility. Many women come yearly during the festival and ask the goddess for children and then promise to repay a certain gift if rewarded with a child. The grove is peculiar for it’s rich history and work of arts. The grove has been preserved over time from century to century as the Osun goddess worshipers believes the place serve as a medium whereby the goddess still communicates with her people. Sacrifices are made daily, weekly, monthly, and the overall big festival comes up every year in August. At the bank of the river, no footwear is allowed as people come there to pray, make their heart desires ,wishes, promises, pledges to the goddess for good fortune. An open arm statue which indicates the goddess does not discriminate and welcomes all. The grove has rich herbal plants that is used for all kind of treatments. No form of wildlife hunting is allowed and equally no felling of trees. During the annual Osun-Osogbo festival the virgin (Arugba) dressed in white carries a heavy calabash that contains sacrifices to be offered to the goddess . She passes through the tunnel with only the priests and priestess of the goddess and pours the sacrifices into the river after which she is allowed to rest at the first palace of the king of Osogbo for days before getting back to her normal self. At the sacred entrance, A sculpture of Susanne Wenger, her dog , the people she worked with and the priest she got married to, are seen. The grove also has the first hanging bridge in Africa.
