03•03•2019❤️ Gone but never forgotten. The way you impacted every person that came into your life and that adored you, your beauty and charisma. I believed that you were resilient to be conquered by something as inferior as an illness. My Ma epitomised what it meant to be a woman who personified strength ever so gracefully. Through her teachings, I learned what it meant to be a true fighter. Growing up remembering being called your name, and told that i look just like you. I'll always remember combing your hair and the way you used to put it in a bun, the smell of your sari's, your jokes and laughter that brought happiness to our faces, the way you made my favourite rice and kari and carrot halwa. The way you loved bollywood movies especially with Akshay Kumar. Your love for Ocean Basket, Nando's, Madeira cake and greatly your love for tea. I could go on forever but we would be here for a lifetime. The little things that stood out the most with the memories you created with us will forever hold our hearts together for it isn't often in our lives that we come across someone so special. My Ma cared more than most, loved more than most and fought more than most because of just how much she cared. But no matter how many times she was knocked down or made to endure things, she just kept coming back; caring more, loving more and fighting more. The kind of love Ma felt for us was a love without condition. She may not have approved of everything we did, nor liked some of the decisions we made, but she didn’t judge. She just kept loving us, letting us know that she was there and if we ever needed her, we could count on her to listen, to comfort and to help. She lived to make our lives better and was proud of us. We can never forget that there is a part of her in each of us, something that she gave to us and asked for nothing in return. We can learn to lean and rely on each other the way we always knew that we could with her. Maybe then she won’t seem quite so far away. Some people come and go. Some stay for a while, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never the same. But goodbyes are not forever, it simply means I’ll miss you until we meet again Ma❤️

Bittersweet moments and hard days are par for the course on this journey. Parenting after loss is hard: an emotional rollercoaster that absolutely f***s with your head all the time. Now don’t get me wrong, having a rainbow baby (or two!) is a DAMN sight better than NOT having that happiness. I often hear the phrase “after every storm comes a rainbow” - which is meant well but, for me, sits in the same bracket as “you can always have another baby”. It’s meant well, but it’s just wrong. Not everyone goes on to have a rainbow baby. It’s actually a really flippant thing to say, and totally devalues any bereaved parent’s loss. Other babies are not replacements for those who aren’t here, they’re siblings. I’m so blessed to have Robyn and Hallie. SO blessed. So today was especially bittersweet as they finally got to meet their big brother. That’s joyous because they’re here, and because I get to take them places and do things with them. But it’s also heartbreaking because Stonefall Cemetery in Harrogate is the only place on earth where these three babies can all be together. And because, for all the joy these two are bringing me, I just want my son here. That’s a real contradiction, and it’s really hard to process. After we’d been to see Henry, the girls attended their first rugby game as I was refereeing the Harrogate Ladies team’s Intermediate Cup Quarter-Final. Any of you who’ve followed my journey on Facebook will know that one of my traditions is to take one of the pine cones from Henry’s grave to every game and take a photo of it on the peg with my shirt. It’s a way of feeling like he’s come to the game with me. Today, the girls did something he’ll never do - they ACTUALLY came to a game with me. And yet, Henry was there too. He’s everywhere. And, in his own way, as always, he made today’s game too. Not like his sisters did. But in his way. Now THAT’S bittersweet. But that’s okay, that’s how this rollercoaster of life as a bereaved parent works - whether you have that rainbow baby or not.

Parenting after loss brings moments of joy, moments of sadness, and sometimes moments that encapsulate both of those emotions at the same time. On Sunday, Robyn and Hallie (and Briony) said goodbye to St. Mary’s in Manchester after having amazing care there for the best part of two months. They got certificates to mark their first journey, their ambulance transfer back to Harrogate. Moment of joy! When I got back to Harrogate Sunday afternoon, I headed up to Harrogate Hospital to see them at the fantastic Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU). It’s a very homely little unit, and the girls have settled in nicely, and are happily sharing a cot together for the first time. The SCBU is right next to the labour ward, and when we went to leave on Sunday evening, this sign stopped me in my tracks. I’ve been up to the maternity department a few times for charity reasons since Henry died, but walking past this sign, it really hit me hard that the last time I walked past this sign for family reasons was the day we walked away from the hospital after Henry died, the day we left our son. Moment of sadness! And this afternoon, a moment I never thought I’d see. Henry’s incredible midwife Amanda came to meet Robyn and Hallie. So this photo is my girls with the only person outside our family who’ll ever hold all three of our children in their arms. There have been certain moments in the last few weeks where the enormity of the journey we’ve been on for the last four and a half years has really hit home, and this was certainly one. But it really fills me with joy to have this wonderful midwife and friend in our lives, and to see her holding Robyn and Hallie with the same love that I remember her holding Henry just made my heart sing.
