I feel like officially inaugurating the cold weather season, it’s been terribly windy this week and raining almost every day and, although cold weather is annoying when you have to go out early to work, when you can stay warm at home with a cup of tea and you look at the rain outside it’s one of the most wonderful feelings! I think my favourite tea is Earl Grey but lately I’ve been drinking an infusion of lemon balm, valerian root, lavender and rose which is caffeine free and helps me relax, plus it smells marvellous! Over the years I have collected many Christmas memories. The very first ones are really peaceful and happy, simple dinners with my parents at home and my little sisters when they came along. As we grew older these were replaced every other year with fancier dinners at a relative’s house. These memories are more about having to dress up, eating weird fancy foods and being made feel awkward about my body and personality during my teen years. When my mum passed away I felt I had to step in as the eldest sister and fill in for her, cook her recipes and make sure everything was perfect and festive. These memories are stressful and bitter. I felt it was my responsibility and put myself under so much pressure to give my family a good Christmas so nothing would change and maybe no one would notice mum’s absence. And as I moved to London I just went into a guilt trip making myself feel bad about being away from my family. I would punish myself not allowing me to enjoy Christmas because I felt I was failing to fulfil my duties of being a part of the family celebrations. So this year I’m trying something different. I’m taking this day as a happy occasion to eat delicious food and exchange a couple of presents with no pressure, no obligations, no expectations. No striving for perfection, no trying to please anyone, no feeling bad for not continuing the traditions. Just a peaceful night in, I want to be happy and comfortable. Christmas as it should be. Wherever you are and whatever your feelings towards Christmas are, I hope you also find peace.
