Today is Alexa’s last day of 8th grade . It’s been a rough year Full of lessons . Together we overcome bullies, gossip, boys and daily insecurities . As a mother I had to learn to listen patiently, allowing her to vent or simply being a shoulder for her to cry on . I made sure to remind her above anything else that she was loved . I realized listening to Alexa that our children are growing up in a extremely hard generation . They have access to the world on there finger tips . We need to be alert and always ready to listen . I’ve come to the conclusion that the teenage years are similar to the toddler years. I have a piece with the brilliant @bethmichaelfox out now in Cultivate - The Feminist Journal of The Centre for Women’s Studies. It’s a video and critical commentary entitled “Breastfeeding Beyond Infancy: An Autoethnographic Dialogue Between Two Women”. SO excited to have put this forward. Hopefully it adds something much needed to feminist discussions of breastfeeding and women’s bodies. The link is in my bio. I never set out to breastfeed for a specific amount of time. Somehow I wound up breastfeeding my first two children until they were four (despite considerable difficulty getting things established the first time around) and now my youngest is almost three - no end in sight. Breastfeeding is such a normal part of our family life that I give it little thought at all but there is a lot of power in sharing our stories, not least to let others know they’re not alone.
