“Hello my name is Amber...I mean, Dr. Hardeman...”⁣ ⁣ Days deep in this whirlwind they call intern year. I get in by 4am. Leave after dark. Always knowing nothing ... like absolutely nothing. Pager going off nonstop with angry people on the other end if you don’t respond within 0.0001 seconds even though you’re doing 5937374 other things at the same time. I’m confident in approximately 0% of the things I’m doing. ⁣ ⁣ Yet, I’m so grateful for my start on pediatric surgery because of the insane amount of work it entails — attention to detail for the babies in the PICU and NICU, empathy for parents who are scared to death, exhibiting strength and providing assurance even when you aren’t sure. As I struggle, I think of the babies who never make it to their first birthday due to non-accidental trauma. I think of families with limited access to even half the education I’ve received. I think of little brown and black children who light up when I introduce myself as “Dr”. ⁣ ⁣ I am so grateful. ⁣ ⁣ Resilience is like a muscle: hard times are never fun, but they are what make us stronger.⁣ ⁣ As I move forward, I will try to master the EHR without losing human touch. I will remain authentic. I will do my best to ameliorate the pain, suffering, and misery of others, even if all I can offer is friendly conversation.⁣ ⁣ I am a PGY-1. This is tougher than I could have ever imagined. Cheers to the end of PGY2 and the beginning of PGY3!! 5 more years to go. PGY2 year was filled with many challenges, personal growth, awesome cases and great mentors. My senior residents and my staff pushed me and let me push myself to increase my operative skills, decision making, and patient management. My OR nurses and scrub techs kept me in line and made the OR a fun place to be in. Excited to start my first 6months of PGY3 year!

Taking photos with every dental school experience like they’re my trophies(and each one is a step closer to getting out of school). Completed root canal treatment on #13 as my endo case #3 (we need 4 to graduate). Patient came into the urgent care clinic with a lot of pain on the left side of their mouth (#13 had a crack from trauma and tooth was responding abnormal on electric and cold testing). After completion of endo, it was so nice getting a text the next day from the patient saying they felt a lot better. ⁣ ✦⁣ Last week was also a hectic week because on Tuesday and Wednesday I also completed part II of written boards!! Hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend
