This is a story I wanted to tell in my first book #SaffronSoul but wasn’t sure how to ~ and it turns out I only found out the full story last week. . My grandmother gave me these janjris (ankle bells) over ten years ago when I moved abroad. I knew they were old, that they belonged to my grandmother’s own grandmother, but she only told me the story on her birthday last week. My grandmother grew up in a small village in Gujarat with her Nani (maternal grandmother) because her mother was living in Mombasa with her family and decided to leave my grandmother behind having given birth to her in India. . At the age of 14, when her father came to take her to home to Mombasa (she’d already refused to leave once when her mother came to collect her, and even refused to believe this was her mother), she had just reached Mumbai with him and was there overnight waiting to take the one-month boat ride to Mombasa, to a continent and country alien to her, with a father she had only just met, when her Nani sent her two cousins to Mumbai to give my grandmother these beautiful chandi silver janjris. . They were given to her Nani by her nani’s father when she got married, who then passed them on to her granddaughter who was leaving for Africa and would soon be married, who then gave them to me when I was leaving London to live in Africa... which makes these bells six generations old, perhaps more. . And so I took a moment to reflect on this when I was getting ready the other day, I wanted to capture these precious bells and tell you about the memories and history they hold, that they are alive with the stories of my grandmother and the stories of her grandmother, and to tell you about the wonderful sounds they still make when I dance.
