•i know y’all know this but it’s worse for women of color — African American women are paid 61 cents, Native American women are paid 58 cents, and Latinas are paid 53 cents. Women of color are more likely than white women to hold low-paying, hourly jobs, lead single-parent households, and experience substantial caregiving burdens, making pay inequality particularly devastating

If the gender wage gap was eliminated, women and families would be able to afford and additional 18 months of food, 14 months of child care, 10 months of rent, or 7 months of mortgage payments.

The wage gap affects all women, especially women of color. On average, women earn only 80 cents for every dollar earned by white, non-Hispanic men. ======================================

Today, April 2, is #EqualPayDay. When women are underpaid, everyone is impacted.
.
At the current rate of change, it will take 100 years for the gender pay gap to close. We believe everyone should be compensated fairly for the work they do, and we do not want to wait 100 years to get there. Take a screenshot from our story and use the tag #Not100 to join the conversation. Source: National Committee on Pay Equity

The first time I negotiated my salary and literally doubled my income was the summer of 2017. That’s a whole story/testimony for another day, but ever since that moment negotiating has become a non negotiable for me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I remember being so excited for the initial offer I received, shared the news with my boyfriend and to my surprise he wasn’t excited “what is wrong with you, you left money on the table”. It was at that moment I realized part of why the pay wage gap exists. We simply don’t ask. #equalpayday
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are 5 tips to negotiating a salary or raise. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Know your value. I say value. Not worth. Know exactly what you bring to the company. Know exactly how your skills translate into dollars. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. Share with industry peers that are close to you what you’re making. You have similar skill sets so it’s a great gauge. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Ask for what you need to live your life the way you need to. Compensate for travel time. All of that. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. Go back over your resume and quantify everything you’ve done. Companies go by the bottom line and are numbers driven. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
5. Have a counter offer ready. Never accept the first offer.
