It’s mental health awareness month! Sorry in advance for the long post...
.
Some of you may know that I have life-threatening food allergies. Over the years, I’ve developed severe anxiety surrounding food that I don’t prepare myself. Cross contamination is real and terrifying. I’ve worked in restaurants and seen how allergies aren’t always taken seriously. Eating out has caused some major anxiety attacks in the past, for fear of having an anaphylactic reaction, so it’s something I’ve chosen to avoid for quite some time...
.
But today, I made progress. I ate out for the first time in 5 years! A big thank you to @hype.food.co for helping me take that step. To anyone looking for an allergen friendly restaurant in Toronto - go check them out! I was extremely impressed with how friendly and accommodating their service was. You won’t be disappointed.
.
If you’ve read this far... What’s one goal - big or small - that you’d like to work towards?

The first time Luke tried milk is a day forever etched into his parents' minds. Just a 6-month-old baby, he had his first anaphylactic reaction and his parents discovered in the most terrifying way that he suffered from life-threatening food allergies.
Fast-forward three years and the story looks very different. Now 17 months into his treatment plan at #SoCalFoodAllergy, Luke's second experience with milk was an occasion to celebrate. Luke's family looks on with joy as he not only safely drinks his milk but loves every drop. With the #ToleranceInductionProgram, Luke and his family are making new, worry-free memories on their journey towards #foodfreedom.

Well, here we are. It was pecan cookies served at the end of the night. She didn’t eat one, thank God, but just being around them brought on the sneezing fits, the sniffles and the throat clearing. It escalated in the car so, an hour from home, we stopped at the nearest ER for monitoring. Thankfully it hasn’t progressed beyond this but I am an angry mama bear. Despite all the pre-holiday communications via multiple messengers asking our host to please not serve any nuts, somehow something got lost in translation. What most people don’t understand is that a nut-allergic child doesn’t have to EAT the nuts to have a reaction. If the allergy is strong enough, just being in close proximity can set it off. Especially when everyone else is hugging and dropping crumbs and breathing on her. So here we are in the ER on Thanksgiving because better safe than sorry. I am done being polite. I am done assuming. I am done accommodating everyone else and not ruffling feathers. This is my child’s life at stake and ignorance simply will not be tolerated.

It’s National Peanut Butter Lovers Day, so let’s talk about peanut allergies! How and when to introduce peanuts are questions that we get often
When to introduce? Early and frequent exposure is the best way to reduce the risk of allergens, especially for high risk babies or a family history New research shows the best time is between 4-6 months and continuing to expose children throughout the first year. How to introduce? This is where it can get tricky. While we want to introduce peanuts, peanut butter can be a choking risk (especially at 4 months) and whole peanuts aren’t advised until at least 3-4 years. We’re sharing three ways to introduce peanuts in our stories today, including our favorite option for higher-risk and vegan babies. Check it out

One of the topics I learned about over the weekend @eatright_pro was the latest in food allergy research. If you're thinking food allergies are on the rise, you're right. There are now 32 million Americans with at least one food allergy, with 1 in 10 adults and 1 in 13 children having food allergies. It’s scary stuff! We don't know why they are increasing or how severe a person's reaction might be to a food allergy. One thing we have learned is that early introduction, especially to peanut products, could prevent food allergies. The AAP now recommends introducing peanuts (in appropriate forms) to babies at 4-6 months of age and to keep feeding them often. Thanks for the talk, @foodallergy! #livelytable #foodallergies #peanutallergy #nutritionresearch #peanutbutter
