Happy 4th of July
Did you know that more dogs get lost on the 4th of July weekend than any other time of the year?
Keep your pets safely inside this weekend as fireworks light up the skies. Use calming remedies, play calming music, and stay with your pets to help them feel more comfortable.
Be sure microchips are in working order AND make sure your pets are wearing collars with current ID tags securely attached. Some folks change to festive holiday collars and harnesses. If you put a new collar or harness on your dog or cat, be sure it has ID tags attached.
Years ago one of my elderly dog patients ended up freaking out from fireworks when she was let outside for a quick pee. She didn’t return. Making matters worse, she was wearing a patriotic collar without ID tags.
Thankfully she was found the next day far from home. The dog warden was contacted and was able to match the dog’s description to my clients. They were reunited with their sweet old dog. The dog was dehydrated and had some minor wounds but made a quick recovery.
I think the mistakes made in this case are obvious. Please don’t let your dogs and cats out unattended during this noisy frightful weekend. And be sure they are wearing proper ID tags.
Let’s all enjoy the holiday with our pets!!

His smile makes me melt like a popsicle on the Fourth of July!
Do the fireworks make your dog nervous? I’m fortunate that Scout has never been bothered by the sound, but many are and It’s the one night that more pets go missing than any other time of year. Please check that your pet is wearing a collar and the identification tag is current and readable. You should also consider leaving them at home in an escape proof area with the tv on to drown out the sound or better yet, stay home and snuggle! Have a safe and happy #4thofjuly friends!
