The last line of defense. The Phalanx Close-In Weapons System was developed as the last line of automated weapons defense against antiship missiles, aircraft and helicopters. The CIWS (pronounced "sea-whiz") concept was introduced to the Navy as far back as 1973 but operational tests weren't completed until 1977. It was approved for production in 1978 and the first completely operational CIWS was installed aboard the USS Coral Sea (CV 43). Utilizing the 20 mm M61 Vulcan Gatling gun autocannon, the CIWS automatically searches for, detects, tracks, engages, and confirms it's kills using it's computer-controlled radar system. Firing armor-piercing tungsten penetrator rounds at a rate of 50 rounds a second, the CIWS throws up a wall of steel and shreds any incoming threats into pieces. Sometimes it is affectionately nicknamed "R2-D2" due to the distinctive barrel-shaped radome and automated nature of operation. Due to it’s flexibility and successful operational record, CIWS seems bound to continue to serve well into the 21st century. Do you have a story about the CIWS?
