#TBT to September 1906, when the city was excavating Market Street for subway construction.⛏️At the time, our confectionery was owned by W. T. Wescott, who went on to run his own chocolate empire throughout the 1910s after passing 110 Market St. to Edward Shane in 1911. Elfreth’s Alley Named after Jeremiah Elfreth, an 18th-century blacksmith and property owner. Among the alley's residents were tradesmen and their families, including  shipwrights, silver and pewter  smiths, glassblowers, and furniture builders. In the 1770s, one-third of the households were headed by women. The Georgian and Federal-style houses and cobblestone  pavement of the alley were common in Philadelphia during this time. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, industry began to change the street. Perhaps the first change was a stove factory that took its place in a row of residential houses in 1868. Eventually, factories surrounded Elfreth's Alley. The city's waterfront was only a few blocks away. Industry changed more than the architecture; successive waves of immigrants, lured by the nearby jobs, moved onto the street. ⚪⚪⚪⚪ #elfreth #elfrethsalley #elfrethalley #philly #philadelphia #roadsideamerica #weirdpennsylvania #weirdpa #pennsylvaniaisbeautiful #ipulloverforthis #wackypa #wackyus #onlyinpa #roadsidepennsylvania #roadsideattraction #jeremiahelfreth #shipwrights #silversmiths #pewtersmiths #glassblowers #furniturebuilders #alley #weirdphilly #phillypulse #phillyphotography #philadelphiahistory #onceuponanation #phillyhistory

Does anyone smoke Phillies Blunts for the sake of Phillies Blunts anymore? Or are they solely bought just for…well, you know. Earnestly, I ask this question. Does anyone? When I was a teenager, I did. I couldn’t tell you why, but I did. I loved the mango flavor. Haven’t smoked one in ten years, but as I was making this post, I suddenly had the craving for one. Standing outside of a Sunoco, waiting for my fresh pack, I never once thought of their history, or even questioned why they were called “Phillies” blunts. When you’re that young, you think the world revolves around you. You take your city and its history for granted. Not that we should be particularly proud of this history, but it is culturally relevant. Swipe to learn more about the history of the blunt. #philliesblunt #cigars #cigarhistory #blunts #phillies #jewishhistory #phillyhistory #philadelphiahistory #philahxfacts #visitphilly #mango

Want to know a random fact? Frank Sinatra married Ava Gardner on this block in 1951. The original house was demolished so this was the next best spot to snap a pic. I've been holding in this random piece of trivia for eleven years, way back when I read every Old Hollywood biography I could get my hands on. Thanks for finally allowing me to share it with you! #franksinatra #avagardner #Philadelphiahistory #phillyhistory #philly #philadelphia #howphillyseesphilly #celebrityweddings #weddings #peopledelphia #ilovephilly #philahxfacts #phillygram #themoreyouknow

When I first seriously started going to the Art Museum a few years ago, I wondered why we were privileged enough to have so many Impressionist paintings by great artists like Degas, Monet, Renoir, Pissarro, and Manet. Maybe it’s a symptom of that famous Philadelphia inferiority complex or the unshakable belief that we can’t have nice things, but it confused me. The answer was right under my nose, hanging on the wall with all the other great impressionists: Mary Cassatt. Mary left Philadelphia for France, befriended Degas, and became the only American painter to break into the Impressionist circle. The Philadelphia Museum of Art is worth a visit just to gawk at these remarkable paintings! #impressionism #monet #marycassatt #impressionists #artmuseum #art #paintings #degas #philadelphia #philly #visitphilly #howphillyseesphilly #philadelphiahistory #philahxfacts #whyilovephilly #frenchart #renoir #monopoly #philadelphiamuseumofart
