Today’s artifact from the National Historical Arms Museum’s inventory is the Projector Infantry Anti Tank Mk 1 or PIAT. During WW2, British troops were in need of a more effective anti tank platform than the Boys Anti Tank Rifle. The PIAT was designed by Major Millis Jefferis and entered production in 1942. The PIAT fires a hollow charge projectile, which means that a metal projectile was imbedded in an explosive warhead. Upon impact, the projectile would penetrate the armour creating a shockwave and shrapnel to enter the target doing significant damage to the interior. The launcher itself was manufactured of thin sheet metal, which made it vulnerable to dents on the battlefield and which resulted in the weapon to be inoperable. Another downside was that it took a lot of work and muscle to cock the PIAT for its first round. It could not be done from the prone position, which meant that the operator would have to break cover. However, once the PIAT fired its first round, it would automatically recock for follow up shots. The PIAT round was able to penetrate 4 inches of steel at a range of about 100 yards. It had not much recoil or back blast, which wouldn’t give away the operator’s position. The PIAT remained in British and Commonwealth service until the early 1950’s, when it was replaced by the M20 Bazooka and by the ENERGA muzzle mounted anti tank grenade which could be fired from the FAL (Canadian C1) rifle. The PIAT, because every artifact has a story. @nationalhistoricalarmsmuseum #coolguns #militaryhistory #military #pewpew #2a #historicalfirearms #gunpics #veterans #guns #firearms #history #gunfacts #gun #gunlife #canada #gunlovers #piat #antitank #ww2 #british #canadian #commonwealth #antiarmour #bazooka #hollowcharge #explosive #grenade
