The Cubs lose their 3rd straight game on Tuesday night by a score of 5-1 as the offense didn’t show up yet again. It was also a long, dreadful loss because of the lengthy rain delay in the 4th inning. On top of that, the Cubs didn’t come out of the delay with anything different as we had 2 hits through 7 innings, and then matched our game total in the 8th with 2 outs via Almora’s single and Addy’s double. Yet, David Bote struck out on 4 pitches to keep the Cubs scoreless. The only run for the Cubs came on a 2-out double by Willson Contreras in the 9th for his first hit of the road trip. It was also disappointing that Kyle Hendricks couldn’t get a normal first game back as he only went 3 innings with 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, and 4 SO in the loss. The Cubs trailed 2-0 entering the delay, and then Mike Montgomery (5.67 ERA) gave up a big 3-run HR to Adam Frazier in the 4th to make it 5-0 right after the game resumed. I think it really is time for Mike Montgomery to go, as this team absolutely needs another lefty, if not two, in the bullpen if we want to contend down the stretch. Once again, there’s not much else to say except that we can only hope that this series is rock bottom and that the Cubs can turn a corner maybe after the All-Star Break. It seems like we have the personnel and the talent, yet we are continually playing down to our competition which is not a winning formula, especially come late season when the division will be as close as we’ve seen it in awhile in my opinion. Tomorrow’s game 3 will be at the same time of 6:05 CT as RHP Yu Darvish (2-4, 4.98 ERA) will face RHP Chris Archer (3-6, 5.50 ERA). Both pitchers are struggling and Archer hasn’t gone past 5 innings in 3 straight outings, so hopefully tomorrow the Cubs can finally get back into the win column. I know it’s not fun, but hang in there because we’ve seen worse times.
